Job description
DESCRIPTION
BENEFITS
The International and Global Studies program at Sewanee: The University of the South invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the study of the Global Environment. We seek candidates, particularly from the social sciences, whose work focuses on the non-US and non-European world, with a preference given to those who work on environmental issues in Asia.
The teaching load for this position is six courses per year. The major in international and global studies involves the interdisciplinary study of global processes as they play out in various parts of the world. We are interested in candidates who can offer courses in our new Global Environment subcategory, which considers the relationships between humans and the natural environment from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.
The successful candidate can expect to teach one section of INGS 200: Introduction to International and Global Studies, a separate 100-level course introducing students to the study of the environment, as well as additional lecture or seminar courses that consider the global environment.
Areas of expertise could include (but are not limited to): global environmental politics, environmental justice, environmental social movements, political ecology, environmental political theory, environmental economics, and environmental displacement and migration. Ideally, candidates should have a PhD. in hand by the time of appointment, but we will consider advanced ABD candidates.
For preliminary review, applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a 1-2 page statement of teaching philosophy (addressing in part their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their teaching), as well as the names and contact information for three professional references through our jobs portal at http://jobs.sewanee.edu/ by March 31.
Copies of syllabi from courses that the candidate has taught or hopes to teach are encouraged but not required.
All questions should be directed to Nicholas Roberts, director of IGS, at nerobert@sewanee.edu.
The University has committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in scholarship and teaching, and to that end, candidates whose research and teaching contribute to DEI are particularly urged to apply.
The University of the South, commonly known as Sewanee, comprises a nationally ranked residential College of Arts and Sciences and a School of Theology. The University is strongly committed to the values of intellectual inquiry, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and living and serving in community. Situated on 13,000 acres atop Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, Sewanee is known for its stunning natural beauty while providing easy access to Chattanooga, Nashville, and Huntsville.
