The Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), Marine Engineering section Mission is to "Keep Alaska Moving" by helping to preparing plans, specifications and estimates in project development: Job Applicant will work with Consulting Firms and Regulatory Agencies to prepare AMHS vessels for Capital Improvement Projects. The applicant will work as the Resident Engineer on AMHS refurbishment and or new build construction projects.

Ketchikan has transitioned over the last 20 years from a lumber mill town and has since become an must visit Alaska tourist destination for cruise ship and private travelers alike.

This position does require travel within the State of Alaska and out of State. This position requires assignment to AMHS refurbishment projects away from the home office. This may include out of State and in-State Shipyards. The Ability to travel to in State or out of State long term assignments to support the project is a requirement of this position.

What you will be doing:
Under the supervision of the Vessel Construction Manager 3:

This position is the design and construction engineer for medium and large vessel refurbishment, upgrade and new build projects. The VCM 1 - 2 will coordinate with all interested parties to prepare the bid documents and to administer service and construction contracts. Acts as the AMHS onsite Resident Engineer during construction projects to instate and out of State shipyards. Supports the AMHS Project Manager.

Who we are looking for:
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:
  • Thorough knowledge of marine engineering principles as it applies to the design and construction of ships and ship systems.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations related to vessel repairs and building.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Skill in communicating with both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze facts and precedents and make appropriate decision.

Minimum Qualifications

Vessel Construction Manager 1

Bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited college or university with a major in marine engineering, naval architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or naval science

AND

one year of experience as an Engineering Assistant 3 or a Vessel Construction Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or Engineering Management and two years work experience equivalent to an Engineer Assistant 3, Engineering Associate or Vessel Construction Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska.

Substitution:
Additional marine or naval engineering experience equivalent in kind and level to a Vessel Construction Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska may be substituted for the required college education on a year-for-year basis.

Graduate study from an accredited college or university in marine engineering or naval architecture may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.


Vessel Construction Manager 2

Bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited college or university with a major in marine engineering, naval architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or naval science.
AND
One year of experience equivalent in kind and level to a Vessel Construction Manager 1 with the State of Alaska.

Substitution:
Additional marine or naval engineering experience equivalent in kind and level to a Vessel Construction Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

One year of project management experience in the Engineer/Architect or Technical Engineer/Architect series with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere and one year of experience equivalent to a Vessel Construction Assistant 3 may, together, be substituted for the required year of experience.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Vessel Construction Manager 1, or Vessel Construction Manager 2 level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. Please respond to all of the minimum qualification questions.

SALARY INFORMATION
Base salary for:
  • Vessel Construction Manager 1 ….. $ 2,922.00 /Bi-Weekly
  • Vessel Construction Manager 2 …. $ 3,121.50 /Bi-Weekly
