Harvard Library seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to advance equitable, high impact models of scholarly communication across the University. The incumbent provides appreciative leadership for the newly formed department, Open Scholarship and Research Data Services. This new department merges two high-performing units, the Office for Scholarly Communication and the Research Data Management Program, to support Harvard Library’s aspirations, on behalf of researchers, to be global leaders in expanding world knowledge and intellectual exploration through the creation, promotion, and support of new and existing models of sharing research outputs.

Reporting to the Assistant University Librarian for Content Strategies and Associate Librarian for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the University Scholarly Communication Officer and Director of Open Scholarship and Research Data Services leads Harvard Library’s efforts to shift the information landscape towards a more equitable, diverse ecosystem of trustworthy resources where the best and most innovative research is freely available to all who need it. Guided by Harvard Library’s strategic directions described in Advancing Open Knowledge, the incumbent leads and collaborates throughout Harvard Library, Harvard University, and in external groups on issues related to the outputs of research, scholarly communication, open access, research data management, and preservation of research data.

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the University Research Data Officer and the University Research Computing Officer to coordinate strategic initiatives that span Harvard researchers, Information Technology and Harvard Library throughout the research lifecycle, bringing library expertise in access and discovery, scholarly communication, research data management, curation, and preservation to the scope of the work.

• Leads and manages Open Scholarship and Research Data Services by ensuring ongoing researcher input, developing, articulating, and implementing strategic vision and direction, overseeing day-to-day operations and projects, establishing priorities, and coordinating work with units in Harvard Library and across the University.

• Works in collaboration with peers in Harvard Library, across Harvard University, and external partners, nationally and internationally, on:

  • repository models, shared repositories, and overlay services

  • best practices for making research outputs sharable and reproducible following the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable)

  • developing policies and services that enable discovery and access, reuse, and preservation of research outputs

  • promoting open infrastructure

• Promotes and cultivates Harvard University’s Open Access Policy ensuring that faculty understand the policies, that the policies are kept current, and that the policies remain viable.

• Expands Harvard Library’s influence in scholarly publishing, both internally and externally, by investigating and implementing a variety of aspects of new models of scholarly publishing.

• Represents Harvard Library on university-wide committees, and in external groups.

• Articulates a strategic vision, establishes priorities, leads goal setting, supervises staff (hiring, onboarding, performance management).

• Prepares and recommends annual budget, monitors budget expenditures, leads grant preparation and writing. May serve as a Principal Investigator.

• Master's degree or international equivalent experience.

• 10 years of professional experience in scholarly communication, research services and support, or related fields.

• 6+ years of experience managing staff.

• Experience in the work of academic research libraries, especially in regard to collection and content development, open access, open data, and scholarly communication.

• Second masters or doctorate preferred.

• Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and issues in open scholarship and science, open access, open data, and scholarly communication.

• Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in the university research environment and research data needs, including appraisal and long-term management.

• Demonstrated record of a collaborative approach to work and problem solving.

• Commitment to supporting efforts to foster diversity and inclusion in library, university, and professional contexts.

• Evidence of a strong service orientation.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment.

• Capacity to thrive in a changing working environment.

• Demonstrated ability to set priorities and to inspire staff to share and achieve them.

• The position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. There may be the opportunity for a flexible or hybrid work model compliant with Harvard University remote work policies.

Open Scholarship Research Data Services merges two high-performing units, the Office for Scholarly Communication and the Research Data Management Program, to support Harvard Library’s aspirations, on behalf of researchers, to be global leaders in expanding world knowledge and intellectual exploration through the creation, promotion, and support of new and existing models of sharing research outputs.

Open Scholarship and Research Data Services focuses on shifting the information landscape towards a more equitable, diverse ecosystem of trustworthy resources, where impactful research is freely available to all who need it. Its staff offer and support other units in offering custom support to researchers across the lifecycle of their research outputs; implement the open-access policies adopted by faculty at every Harvard school; advise on the orderly deposit and archiving of research outputs in the most appropriate repository or repositories; promote standards in metadata schema and description practices to enhance discovery; investigate and implement a variety of aspects of new models for scholarly publishing, including services and infrastructure leveraging current repository work; and design forward-looking repository models in collaboration with peers to provide open access to scholarship.
