Salary Range: $32,460 - $56,806 - NC06

This position will serve as a Lead Worker of a Bridge maintenance Crew. Work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts and non-NBIS pipes (54" and greater in diameter) within Division 4. Position is technical in nature and labor intensive & employee will be required to work in and around heavy traffic at interstate speeds, near heavy equipment, power tools, etc. Qualified individual should be familiar with and/or able to learn, but not limited to carpentry skills, welding, pipe fitting, structure painting, machine operation, inspection of various materials that compromise state bridges, large pipe or culverts, utilizing small hand tools and power tools and ability to work in a close team environment or independently as needed. This position is subject to Emergency Call Back, and during certain times of the year may work a 4-day 10-hour schedule. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must meet the Education Requirements and all KSAs in order to qualify.
Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work
experience that demonstrates the following:


  • Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices
  • Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones
  • Working knowledge of Advanced Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Bridge Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
Additional Expectations:

Working safely is a condition of employment. Must possess good communication skills. Follow instructions to complete assigned tasks. Demonstrate ability to operate assigned machinery effectively. Use of tools associated with related Bridge maintenance and/or construction activities. The ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/ or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This job will require work to be performed will suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. Valid NC Driver's License required. NCDOT requires employee to obtain NC Commercial Driver's License, Class "A" Permit, within 60 calendar days of effective hiring date, and a valid CDL within 90 calendar days of the hire date. Continued employment is contingent upon possession of valid CDL. Pre-employment drug testing may be required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel-toed safety shoes are required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
