Position Summary:

The Institute of Arctic Biology is seeking motivated seasonal research technicians to assist with field data collection for the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research Program (BNZ LTER).

Duties:

1001. Navigate to specific coordinates using mobile GIS, by a combination of truck, ATV, foot, or boat. 2. Collect baseline ecological data, including measurements of stand composition, understory vegetation, mosses and lichens. 3. In office: Review data and address inconsistencies or errors. In general, the crew works as a whole to accomplish a variety of tasks. Based on experience, each crew member will be assigned a primary role and will then be expected to fill in on other duties as needed. Throughout the summer and fall there will be times when the crew will aid in other projects related to collection of core ecological data for the Bonanza Creek LTER.Essential

Approximate employment dates are from late April through October. We are open to discussing flexibility in start and end dates for students.

Travel to plots will be by helicopter, 4-wheel drive vehicle, ATV, riverboat, and foot. Significant amounts of off-trail hiking, in steep and difficult terrain, with heavy backpacks, is required. Working conditions can be difficult, with exposure to hazards such as bad weather, stinging and biting insects, and encounters with wildlife.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Interest in natural sciences; field experience; knowledge of boreal tree species; high level of physical fitness, in particular, the ability to walk long distances in rugged terrain; ability to maintain a positive attitude while working long days in all types of conditions; backcountry camping experience; ability to follow instructions, work independently and as part of a team, and take responsibility for collecting high-quality data; basic computer spreadsheet software skills. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in fieldwork, knowledge of boreal plant species, data management, and coursework in biology/ecology/forestry or a related field.

Required Experience:

Adequate experience in ecology, biology, or natural resources to perform the assigned duties. PREFERRED: Experience with field logistics in a remote setting.

Typical Education or Training:

Proof of valid driver's license will be required at time of hire. Education or field experience related to ecology, biology, or natural resources.

NOTE: While we welcome out of state applicants, this position does not provide travel to Fairbanks, housing, or meals. (Food will be covered during all camping trips.)
