The Office of Innovation & Technology (OIT) is the central IT agency for the City of Philadelphia headed by the Chief Information Officer (CIO). OIT oversees all major information and communications technology initiatives for the City of Philadelphia - increasing the effectiveness of the information technology infrastructure, where the services provided are advanced, optimized, and responsive to the needs of the City of Philadelphia’s businesses, residents, and visitors. OIT responsibilities include: identifying the most effective approach for implementing new information technology directions throughout city government; improving the value of the city’s technology assets and the return on the city’s technology investments; ensuring data security continuity; planning for continuing operations in the event of disruption of information technology or communications services; and supporting accountable, efficient and effective government across every city department, board, commission and agency.


Job Description

A person employed in the Office of Innovation and Technology will actively engage in the skills devel-opment program and on-the-job training with the goal of becoming qualified for one of the department’s Civil Service positions. Employees in this category must be residents of Philadelphia and be at least eighteen (18) years of age. A minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent is required. An associate degree or other certifications is preferred.
The training period in this program is designed not to exceed eighteen (18) months.
Specific duties and responsibilities may vary, but there are several core tasks that will be associated with the Technology Apprentice, including:
  • Monitor and troubleshoot the network
  • Monitor network hardware to ensure the proper operations of routers, switches, firewalls, and remote technologies
  • Monitor automated and end-user incident and outage reporting
  • Document all incoming calls and record the technical issues addressed in each call. Maintain logs of resolutions, communicate about ongoing problems, and use a ticketing system to update information regarding the progress of each call
  • Assess severity and impact of issues and escalate to proper technical resources when appropriate
  • Create reports on uptime, bandwidth usage, server utilization, and other key metrics
  • Run daily, weekly, and monthly report
  • Provide direct customer support when required
  • Maintain and update documentation for Operations Procedures

Qualifications

The Technology Apprentice should diagnose and resolve issues using technical abilities, computer knowledge, and analytical skills. The Technology Apprentice must display the following:
  • Familiarity with networking technology – understanding how networking technologies work and the ability to replace and install routers, switches, and other equipment is vital for the position.
  • Computer skills – Technology Apprentice will learn computer operating systems, databases, software engineering, and wireless technologies
  • Customer service – resolving customer networking issues in a timely and successful manner is an essential aspect of the position.
  • Troubleshooting – troubleshooting skills is essential for this position to determine the cause of network issues
  • Analytical thinking – analyzing given information about network problems to arrive at real solutions is essential to provide effective resolutions
  • Communication skills – strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills are essential for effectively communicating with other technicians, management, clients, and vendors

Salary Not to Exceed: $15.00 per hour
