Position Summary:

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides optimal vision services to students on his/her caseload, fulfilling each student’s particular mandate.

Key/Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Provides 45–60-minute vision sessions to 5-6 students per day.
  • Conducts annual functional vision learning media assessments for each student.
  • Interviews family members, observes students, directly assesses students, and writes a thorough report with suggestions for classroom adaptations and goals for the following school year.
  • Writes daily session notes and takes/keeps data.
  • Writes quarterly progress reports.
  • Works with students on individualized vision goals in 1:1 sessions.
  • Works with students in academic sessions as well as classroom activities in order to provide appropriate adaptations for the students’ visual needs.
  • Maintains organized records.
  • Adjusts lessons, goals, and benchmarks as necessary.
  • Carefully plans lessons and creates and organizes materials in advance.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling, working with other providers, and adapting lesson plans and materials.
  • Provides vision education consultation services to all staff members and parents when necessary.
  • Modifies and adapts academic and therapeutic materials for students using braille, tactiles, enlargements, etc.
  • Participates in department, team, parent-teacher, and CSE meetings.
  • Performs all other duties, as assigned

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Masters’ degree required.
  • New York State Education Department License: Teacher of the Visually Impaired
  • Must be well organized with superior attention to detail and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Able to work with a great degree of independence and focus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Participate in professional development and CTLE in order to maintain state licensure.

Compensation Range:

  • $69,500 to $75,500 per year
