TITLE: Vocational Teacher
DEPARTMENT: School
REPORTS TO: Transition Specialist
FLSA: Exempt

Linwood School, a non-public special education program, serves students ages 5 - 21 in a small structured positive learning environment. We are seeking a motivated and qualified career development teacher to work collaboratively with the transition specialist and special educators in expanding our vocational program. Vocational programming includes vocational skill development, school-based vocational experiences, and community-based vocational experiences. We are looking for a dynamic leader to reach out to the community to identify potential job opportunities within the community and then design a vocational program to teach our students the vocational skills needed to access community job opportunities. The Vocational Teacher will work closely with the Transition Specialist, Special Educators and other Related Service Providers from the school team to identify and match students with opportunities that result in milestone achievements and measureable outcomes for the long-term success of both the program and its students. Important functions include: providing individual and targeted assistance with professional development and preparation for employment, identifying and connecting students with education, skills training, work-based training and placement opportunities, and documenting all communication and follow-up efforts with students, partners and providers. Linwood School is looking for someone with experience working in a mentoring or advising role, comfortable with public speaking, able to communicate ideas, advice, and knowledge of workforce or industry trends in Maryland.

Position Summary

Job Description:
The Career Development Teacher would be responsible for developing and implementing a systematic vocational training program for transitioning youth.

  • Teaching or providing training to special educators in the courses listed below:

Pre-Career: Students will be provided opportunities to engage in pre-career instruction, designed to develop and practice routines, transition activities, and increase attention span while focusing on various employment skills. Pre-career skills training allows students to participate in interpersonal skills (communication, social awareness, networking, teamwork, accepting criticism, Social Worker collaboration), understanding employment (career options, resumes, applications, maintaining a job), and independent living skills (hygiene, money management, community understanding, goal setting). The scope and sequence of pre-career instruction will differ from a typical curriculum and adapted and modified materials will be determined by the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). *Curriculum guides used to implement course: Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards, Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement (VB-MAPP), the Syracuse Community-Referenced Curriculum Guide, The Assessment of Functional Living Skills, and the TTAP (TEACCH Transition Assessment Profile.

Vocational Skills: Vocational training will focus on skill sets and hands-on- learning in a simulated work environment and allow students to develop skills that can be used in the workplace. Vocational skills will take place in the classroom or in the school environment. Classes will prepare students for a specific trade or career area that emphasizes hands-on learning and the application of knowledge. Having the training will provide students with autonomy and a feeling that they are free to make their own decisions. The scope and sequence of vocational skills instruction will differ from a typical curriculum and adapted and modified materials will be determined by the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). *Curriculum guides used to implement course: Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards, The Syracuse Community Referenced Curriculum Guide, The Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS).

Career Clusters: Students will be provided opportunities to engage in career cluster instruction, designed to develop and practice specific vocational areas. Career Clusters allow students to gain the prerequisite skills needed to successfully transition to workplace environment. Linwood’s Career Clusters focus in the areas of hospitality, business, recreation, and leisure, automotive, manufacturing, and food & beverage services. These Career Clusters provide students with the context related to traditional academics while also learning the skills specific to a career. The scope and sequence of career cluster instruction will differ from a typical curriculum and adapted, and modified materials will be determined by the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). *Curriculum guides used to implement course: Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards, The Syracuse Community-Referenced Curriculum Guide,The Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Implement vocational program for transition aged students.

*Integrate academic and vocational curricula to support students in developing a strong vocational skill set.

*Identify student interests and develop individualized vocational programs based on informal/formal interest assess

*Implement school-based work experience program.

*Implement community work experience program with work experiences within the school setting.

*Social Worker o Provide transportation training to students eligible for work experiences. o Participate in IEP meetings of transitioning youth.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

  • Must hold a valid Maryland teaching certificate.
  • At least three years’ teaching experience.
  • Experience working with transitioning youth preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in the area of vocational education.
  • Knowledge of MSDE Transitioning Youth guidelines.
  • Must possess strong problem solving skills and be detail oriented.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills to effectively interface with all levels of management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and

Outlook.

  • A skill set that includes the ability to interface in a professional manner with Linwood staff, parents, school system personnel and other professionals.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.
