JOB TITLE/ASSIGNMENT


JOB TITLE: TEACHER—GRADE SCHOOL

LOCATION: Grade School

CHARACTERISTICS: Certified employee, contract dependent on full- or part-time status

REPORTS TO: Site Principal

SUPERVISES: In some cases, instructional assistants, tutors, and/or teacher interns

EVALUATION: Evaluated annually by the site Principal


OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

To provide excellence in education by establishing an environment that facilitates student learning, encourages the realization of personal potential, and contributes to students’ development as mature, able, and responsible adults.


RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Possesses knowledge of District policies and regulations relating to areas of responsibility.
  • Develops and implements activities that encourage students to be lifelong learners.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students, with special attention given to TAG, special education, ESL, and other students, who require modified programs of study. The classroom curriculum should adhere to State standards and School Board policy.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the developmental maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistently to meet the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups, recognizing the physical limitations of the space provided.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action the District’s philosophy of education, instructional goals, and other objectives.
  • Assesses students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Seeks the assistance of District specialists as required for referrals related to exceptional education services, such as special education, gifted and talented education, ESL, and the like.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and maintains order in the classroom. All classroom rules should be consistent with School Board and building policies.


ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans and supervises the job performance of educational assistants in cooperation with the administration.
  • Works with classroom volunteers to provide enhanced learning opportunities for students.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as requested or needed.
  • Supervises students both in and out of the classroom.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in District provided in-service activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities related to job responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within contractual agreements.
  • Adheres to all provisions of the currently negotiated Certified Contract.


OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES

  • Valid Oregon Teaching License with appropriate subject and/or level endorsements.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR-AED Cards are preferred.


EDUCATION/VOCATIONAL PREPARATION

  • Appropriate Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Successful student teaching, intern teaching, or past teaching experience.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

A moderate degree of physical stamina with occasional lifting of 10 to 50 pounds. Ability to move freely to various locations within the classroom and other supervisory settings (cafeteria/playground). Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending. Frequent repetitive activities, including hands, arms, and legs, for clerical-related work. Exposure to noise and activity in a school setting. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary, fringe benefits, working conditions, and the like are negotiated every three years between the Riverdale School Board and Riverdale Teachers’ Association.


Riverdale School District complies with the Oregon Health Authority mandate that requires all staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved religious or medical exception. New hires will be required to provide proof of their vaccination status or receive approval on a submitted OHA exception request form for a qualifying medical or religious reason before their first day of employment.
