The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. Essential Job Duties
This position supervises approximately 8 veterinary technicians that function in the Randall B Terry Companion Animal Medical Center (TC) and the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center (EFAVC). In addition, this position supervises 3 technicians in the Sterile Processing Department, which maintains all instrumentation needed in surgical areas using various sterilization techniques.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Ensuring that all patients in the centers will receive high quality care by managing, recruiting, hiring and evaluating all direct reports.
  • Effectively planning, directing and managing day to day operations of areas of responsibility.
  • Functioning as a working technician for the departments, providing unique internal customer service, surgical support, data collection, and patient care.
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for all activities relating to scheduling, patient care standard operating procedures, and staffing to ensure service area objectives are met and takes corrective action when needed.
  • Communicating with students, staff and clinicians to receive the most up to date information regarding presenting problem, diagnostics being performed as well as projected plan of care for the animal. Working with small animal companion animals, exotic patients and equine and farm animals.
  • Participating in human resources related responsibilities, including but not limited to; recruitment and selection process; conducts performance management; ensuring human resources policies and related information are shared with employees; resolution of disciplinary and grievance issues; monthly time sheets.
  • Ensuring employees have access to tools and information for career development opportunities and delivering and overseeing on the job training.
  • Using extensive knowledge of veterinary medicine to effectively plan, direct and manage day-to-day operations of areas of responsibility. Planning work operations and priorities daily or weekly to meet hospital objectives.
  • Proficiency in usage of specialized equipment in both surgical support and patient post-operative care. Providing extensive surgical assistance in preparing patients, scrubbing, shaving, acting as surgical nurse, and operating specific surgical and laser equipment.
  • Supervising, coaching, teaching, orienting and evaluating in the principals of Ophthalmology for all senior veterinary students as well as post-doctoral interns and residents.
  • Recording a variety of data relating to patient care, surgical procedures and preparation, and client communications. Providing quick and accurate information regarding each patient. Entering data proficiently into electronic medical record.
  • Maintaining a clean working environment to ensure Infectious Disease standards are followed and infection is not spread. Handling all medical/biological and infectious waste appropriately.
  • Following all radiation safety, OSHA, and Environmental Health and Safety standards.
  • Acting as the primary laser safety officer for all 3 medical hospitals. Providing all annual and biannual training to onboarding staff, house officers and faculty. Monitoring use of all laser classified devices and maintains all laser safety certifications/standards and inspections.
  • Keeping all necessary equipment clean and in working order and having all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available for procedures and daily patient husbandry. Managing resources, including budget and personnel; establishing priorities in the use of resources including space, equipment and/or facilities.
  • Evaluating and modifying protocols to ensure excellent patient care and client service. Ensuring adherence to procedures and work standards; recommending changes.
  • General oversight of units. Financial responsibilities include the continuing education budget, staff salaries, supplies and the fee structure for specialties to insure cost capture, industry equivalence and supply cost.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications
  • NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC Registration within 6 months of date of hire. NC RVT exam eligibility requirements include graduation from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited veterinary technician program and a passing score on the National Veterinary Technician Exam. At least 5 years of experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably referral / tertiary care / teaching hospital.
  • Experience working with small animals and comfortable working with large animals.
  • Previous supervisory experience. Equine handling experience.
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
  • Ability to maintain physical work for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications
At least 5 years of previous veterinary technician experience.

Required License or Certification
NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC Registration within 6 months of date of hire.
