Davis Behavioral Health, Inc. is seeking a part-time Family Peer Support Specialist (FPSS) to join its Children, Youth and Families Mental Health team. The successful candidate will spend a large amount of time working in the community and schools in Davis County, Utah. The successful candidate will work closely with families who have children and teens with complex mental health needs by linking families to local resources and supports, providing peer support to parents, providing family advocacy and Wraparound facilitation.

A Family Peer Support Specialist must have a broad base of experience with life circumstances and possess a diverse view of what families need to have better lives. Must be able to work under supervision and is able to work as a team member. The ideal family facilitator understands the role of support in helping families with complex needs. Support means not taking over, but providing short term assistance that builds independence of the family. A family facilitator understands that they are not clinicians but rather work as part of a team that may include clinical input. A family facilitator has excellent interpersonal boundaries and knows when to and when not to provide support to a family. The ideal facilitator is able to work collaborative with a team of family members and professionals who develop and carry out individualized plans. A preferred facilitator is one who understands and has experience with different systems, including schools, mental health, child welfare, juvenile justice, health, and others.

Schedule & Classification

This position is classified as full-time, non-exempt and is expected to work 20-25 hours per week.

The proposed schedule for this position is Monday through Friday and also requires flexibility to meet the needs of the youth and families, which may require early mornings and/or evening hours. The schedule may be modified based on agency and client/family needs and may include early morning or evening hours.

Compensation

  • $17.00 per hour for candidates without a bachelors degree
  • $18.00 per hour for candidates with a bachelors degree
  • $21.00 per hour + based on years of licensure for candidates with an active SSW or full SUDC license

Experience and Skills:

The selected candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screening. DBH will not hire individuals currently using illegal drugs or abusing alcohol; therefore, making employment at DBH conditional upon successfully passing pre-employment drug screening by providing a valid sample. Candidates who are offered employment are required to report for a drug screen at an Intermountain WorkMed location within 24 hours of being requested to do so by the DBH Human Resources Department.

Davis Behavioral Health works with Federal grants and must comply with the Federal drug laws, including no use of medical marijuana.

DBH utilizes an electronic medical health records system, so computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office products is required.

Meeting monthly face-to-face service expectations and productivity standards is also required.

The successful candidate must also have a clean driving record to operate agency vehicles and/or transport clients, when necessary.

Preference will also be given to candidates who are bilingual English/Spanish.

Family Peer Support Specialist Certification Requirements

The successful candidate must be certified as a Family Peer Support Specialist (FPSS) by the Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health. Candidates who meet eligibility requirements to become a FPSS (http://hsemployee.utah.gov/dsamh/cps/) will also be considered with the expectation that certification as a Targeted Case Manager (TCM) is completed within the first 30 days of employment and certification as a Peer Support Specialist is completed as soon as possible, but no later than 6 months after hire.

Qualifications to become a certified Targeted Case Manager through the State of Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health include:

  • 400 hours of work, volunteer, and/or education experience in human services or a related field
  • Required 40-hour case management practicum and examination provided by DBH during the TCM certification class.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with clients that have sever mental illness, are hard working, can work both independently and successfully within a small outreach team.

In addition, the following skills/qualities are required for the Family Peer Support Specialist position:

  • Be a self-identified current or former user of mental health or co-occurring services who can relate to others who are now using those services
  • Have personal experience and knowledge of recovery
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing
  • Be able to establish trusting relationships with their peers
  • Be able to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Be able to work evenings and weekends
  • Have good knowledge of city’s public transit system
  • Be able to use computer to record services or be willing to learn
  • May need to be able to climb stairs when visiting individuals in their apartments/residences

Preference for a bachelor degree in social work or related field and/or current licensure in the state of Utah as an SSW or SUDC/CSUDS/ASUDS, but is not required.

Further preference will be given for candidates who have personal experience and knowledge of recovery.

Experience working with youth with mental illness or substance use disorders is preferred.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and community agencies (such as work force services, AP&P, courts, landlords, etc.)
  • Flexibility in days and hours available for scheduled work, including evenings and weekends
