Job description

This position is responsible for conducting failure analysis and other engineering investigations. The job involves performing site inspections and documentation, evidence examination, research, analysis, testing and reporting. Candidate will market the company and self to obtain and/or maintain client base and build business. Plan, manage and coordinate activities for client projects to ensure that goals/objectives of projects are accomplished within prescribed timeframe and funding parameters by performing the following duties personally or with the assistance of other consulting/engineering staff.

  • Prepares and reviews project proposals or plans to determine time frame, funding limitations, and procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project.
  • Makes determination to accept or decline potential new projects based on all variables.
  • Confers with project staff to outline work plan and to assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority. Directs and coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure projects progress on schedule and within prescribed budgets.
  • Work performed in this position may be highly varied but will likely include corrosion investigations, machinery and materials projects.
  • Prepares technical, project-related reports for clients as required.
  • Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems.
  • Conducts well-developed and well-prepared client presentations and technical conference presentations.
  • Perform marketing and business development to identify potential clients and strategies to build client base.
  • Be willing to work towards testifying in court proceedings (depositions and/or trials) on behalf of clients, as required.

Experience Preferred

  • 2+ years’ work experience, can include summer jobs and/or internships
  • Basic familiarity with hand and power tools, instrumentation, and machine tools
  • Experience in failure analysis
  • Materials testing laboratory experience
  • Ability to operate digital microscopes and scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy

Skills Required

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Above average verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in technical presentation and writing of technical reports.
  • Proficient with mathematical, CAD and office productivity software on multiple OS platforms
  • Strong mechanical aptitude

Skills Preferred

  • Advanced proficiency with MATLAB, AutoCAD, Excel, and programming languages
  • Experience with FEA software ABAQUS or similar

Education Requirements

  • BS in Materials/Metallurgy, Applied Mechanics/Engineering Mechanics, etc. from an ABET accredited engineering school.
  • F.E./EIT status and capable of working towards P.E. license (preferred)
  • Formal training in Failure Analysis (preferred)

Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Must be able to occasionally travel for short-notice trips of variable duration
Trips may include weekend and holiday travel
