Position Summary

The VCU School of Business invites talented and qualified candidates to apply for the role of Staff Accountant. The Staff Accountant is part of a small team of finance professionals committed to stewarding the VCU School of Business Foundation’s philanthropic resources with the highest standard of excellence and ambition for impact. Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance & Administration, the Staff Accountant will assist with the Foundation’s day-to-day accounting functions including accounts payable, general ledger, cash management, revenue tracking, and account analysis. This position plays a role in creating and implementing improvements to enhance the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the team and provide high-quality service to stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities



Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the lead in the accounts payable process, including invoice, credit card expenses, and payment processing, ensuring complete and accurate coding in the general ledger and documentation for all transactions; act as the main contact for vendor inquiries and maintain all vendor files.
  • Manage revenue transactions from multiple sources, including gifts and programs, using fund accounting practices to ensure donor intent is appropriately captured.
  • Interface with the School of Business finance team on funding transfers, reporting, and new account creation.
  • Assist with general ledger monthly and annual closing process, including account reconciliations and preparation of various schedules.
  • Prepare reporting and serve as a resource to constituent units and internal staff.
  • Ensure all financial records are maintained in an organized manner, including a knowledge base of accounting systems and procedures.
  • Support some financial aspects of scholarship awarding and tracking funds raised.
  • Perform special projects and other ad-hoc tasks as assigned.

Education and Experience


  • Undergraduate degree in accounting and between 0-3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A master’s degree is a plus, or intent to pursue coursework that would support eligibility to sit for the uniform CPA examination.
  • CPA license in process or intent to sit for the exam, preferred.
  • Accounts Payable and/or general ledger experience preferred, but we will consider recent college graduates with more limited experience.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); fund accounting preferred


Required Qualifications
  • Ability to adhere to high standards of accuracy and to exhibit a strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel including pivot tables.
  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational, project and time management skills.
  • Solution-oriented, able to independently identify problems, ask questions, and demonstrate a drive for improvement.
  • Demonstrated professional communication and collaboration skills to foster an efficient and effective team environment, while contributing to an environment of integrity and ethical behaviors.
  • Appetite for continued learning and ability to learn new software applications, including
  • Financial Edge NXT, Blackbaud CRM, Slate CRM, third party AP systems, and Google suite.
  • Willingness to assist with other tasks and projects as assigned.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

This position is eligible for a hybrid and flexible work schedule once training is complete, but will typically require two- three days in the office, depending on accounting cycles.
