Overview

Assumes principal staff responsibility for long- and short- term media relations programs, projects, plans, special events (i.e., news conferences/press events) including identification of media relations problems/issues and opportunities, and assessment of avenues of approach to given media needs. Develops comprehensive media relations strategies to determine ways to secure optimal media coverage for key programs, services and initiatives. Develops and keeps current a list of the best spokespeople within assigned partners, including conducting media training, when necessary, in conjunction with the Director of Public Relations. Identifies media opportunities and pitches them to traditional media outlets.

• Works closely with partner management and marketing officer to develop communications and media relations plans, on both an annual and project-specific sub-plan basis, to support strategic and marketing goals of the assigned partners and service lines.
• Acts as primary media contact for assigned affiliate(s)/service(s). Responds to calls from news media, finding the most appropriate individual qualified to address issue(s). Provides patient conditions in accordance with established policies. Serves as escort when media is on site, obtaining appropriate release forms and adhering to patient privacy laws.
• Assumes on-call duties on rotating basis for one week at a time, responding to requests for patient conditions, interviews and other matters on behalf of all institutional partners. Serves as backup for another institutional partner in the system to ensure all partners are covered by media relations representation at all times, requiring officer to familiarize him or herself with the backup institution.
• In crisis situations, plans and supports special activities to communicate with the media and other affected groups and, as assigned, acts as an official spokesperson for institutional partners with the media and, when needed, the system. Assumes Public Information Officer (PIO) role in the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), if activated.
• Coordinates with Social Media Strategies to help identify content, as needed. Supports the monitoring of Lifespan social media accounts and, when needed, appropriately shares and responds to posts needing immediate attention.

QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION:

A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field required.

The incumbent should have excellent writing skills and the ability to take scientific/technical information and synthesize it for a public (non-scientific) audience. The incumbent should also have excellent diplomatic/client management skills and experience in crisis management and issues analysis.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of five years experience and proven accomplishment in intermediate level communications management, journalism, media relations, corporate or agency writing/editing, preferably in a health care setting.

WORK LOCATION:

The work location of this position is hybrid – the incumbent will work two days on-site at a Lifespan hospital in Providence, one day a week on site at Newport Hospital, and the remaining days remotely/at home.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
