SUMMARY

The Senior Epidemiologist will work with a team of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, senior and junior analysts in supporting the Chief of Epidemiology and Analysis and Chief of Satellite Support in accomplishing the division’s mission to be the central epidemiological resource and a global health surveillance proponent for the U.S. Armed Forces. We provide timely, relevant, actionable, and comprehensive health surveillance information in order to promote, maintain, and enhance the health of military and military-associated populations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides consultative support within 1-3 business days from receipt of request on epidemiology, biostatistics, or on a wide variety of health surveillance questions on military-related populations to personnel within AFHSB, preventive medicine and public health professionals, key military leaders, policy leaders, and researchers throughout the DoD.
  • Consults in epidemiology, biostatistics, or public health shall include (but not limited to):
    • Determination of feasibility of all requests and taskings received by AFHSB in using the health and personnel data stored in DMSS and serum in the DoDSR.
    • Formulation of sound epidemiological studies (i.e., hypothesis generation, study concept and design, data retrieval from AFHSB and other DoD databases, analytic techniques, and reporting).
    • Expert opinion on infectious disease, primary care, preventive medicine, occupational medicine, and other health topics that are pertinent in health surveillance analysis and reporting.
    • Preparation of ad hoc briefings, white papers, summaries, reports, and presentations on health surveillance.
    • Expert opinion on health surveillance and public health from Congressional inquiries or requests from medial or the public.
    • Collaboration with Government and contract personnel within AFHSB or from other DoD/Federal agencies in planning and designing sound epidemiological studies to submit for publication in peer-reviewed medical or scientific journals after informing E&A.
    • Work with or provide consultation to other staff (contract or government) within AFHSB, U.S. Armed Forces, and other DoD agents to standardized medical case definitions, methodology, analysis, and reporting which are important in health surveillance.
  • Plans and designs long-term epidemiological studies that will help identify risk factors for specific health outcomes, leading to policy changes or behavior modifications as indicated by the study results.
  • Uses expertise in SAS® and SQL® to review and ensure quality control of coding and analysis of personnel and health data for military-related epidemiological studies (ad hoc or recurrent) received by E&A.
  • Ensures data quality of reports, analyses, and products produced and distributed by E&A are of highest quality and accuracy.
  • Ensures timely completion of analysis, summaries, and reports produced by E&A.
  • Maintains proficiency in epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health and remain current on public health issues.
  • Provides professional mentoring to medical and graduate students, physicians-in- training, and other health professional within DoD.
  • Writes and edit medical and scientific papers in support of the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report.
  • Supports of DoD working groups (as assigned by E&A) within or external to AFHSB that are involved in development of DoD-wide health surveillance.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

  • No supervisory/management authority.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Doctorate degree in public health, epidemiology, or related health discipline and 5 or more years’ professional experience in public health, applied epidemiology, or infectious disease
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of work experience in related occupation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with DoD health-related databases to perform longitudinal analyses.
  • Solid knowledge in epidemiology, preventive medicine and public health and stays current on public health events.
  • Expertise in planning, designing, analyzing, and reporting on long-term epidemiological studies that will help identify risk factors for specific health outcomes in military-related populations.
  • Able to perform quality assurance checks on programming codes utilized in E&A.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must have a current DoD security clearance (preferred) or the ability to obtain one.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Working Knowledge of epidemiology training and experience, including expertise in understanding and reviewing SAS® and SQL® code.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint).
  • Ability to use technical skills to conduct analyses, write reports, prepare briefings, and coherently present results.
  • Working Knowledge of DoD health-related databases to perform longitudinal analyses.
  • Knowledge in epidemiology, preventive medicine and public health and stays current on public health events.
  • Ability to plan, design, analyze, and report on long-term epidemiological studies that will help identify risk factors for specific health outcomes in military-related populations.
  • Ability to perform quality assurance checks on programming codes utilized in E&A.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and able to collaborate with others on projects and investigations.
  • Excellent medical and scientific papers writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent command of English language and can coherently present analytical results.
  • Ability to be a team player who collaborates well with other professionals
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed primarily in a climate-controlled office environment.

Estimated Starting Salary Range: $120,000.00 - $ 140,000.00 annually.
