Job Overview



The Senior, CAD Designer is responsible for all aspects of CAD Design including trend research and development of prints, color combinations, stripes, graphics, embellishments, jacquards, and plaids for each season. This position will support the CAD Director in developing and executing a strategic vision, with a progressive, customer-centric approach all while delivering on sales and profit objectives. This position also requires strong people leadership skills as well as growth of direct reports. This role requires the ability to leverage technical expertise to identify opportunities and develop an assortment. A fundamental requirement is to be able to build trust with their teams and key collaborators.




Essential Functions



In Season Forecasting

  • Partner with CAD Director on trend research for Seasonal Prep + Concept milestone meetings, specifically for print, colorways, embellishments, graphics, & any new ornamental treatments
  • Participate in strategic meetings with partners, providing recommended print/pattern assortments
  • Modify the print/pattern assortment based on buyer and customer input
  • Assist in identifying the key print/patterns that comprise each classification
  • Adhere to the seasonal time and action calendar for area of responsibility

Assortment Vision, Strategy & Selection

  • Responsible for the design and development of colors, prints, and fabric simulations
  • Re-color and design prints, plaids and stripes
  • Clean up prints to assist vendors on executing to proper number of screens.
  • Create proper repeats of patterns
  • Create pitches and supply print and color chips for development packages
  • Partner with colorist to review strike-offs & create necessary artwork revision when needed
  • Design placement prints and graphics
  • Contribute additional prints that align with the theme of the seasonal collection
  • Keep up to date on CAD technology
  • Competitive shop (domestically and internationally) and determine action necessary to address competitive challenges
  • Staying up to date on new technology/techniques/tools for print design

Relationship Building with Overseas/Domestic Vendors, Marketing, Product Integrity, & Technical Design

  • Maintain an industry presence that allows for connections, new business opportunities, and ideas at Macy’s. Represent and support the Macy’s brand while maintaining this presence and building relationships.
  • Communicate extensively with design and product teams.
  • Communicate regularly with design & product management teams to gather input and share print/pattern development direction.
  • Communicate daily with overseas offices to share print/pattern development information.
  • Select and approve patterns, scale, and colors.
  • Use design software programs for style, color, and pattern development.



Competencies



Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design or Fine Arts preferred
  • Ideally, 5-7+ plus years of industry experience

Communication Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence
  • Able to develop, plan, and present given category of business
  • Able to speak the print design language to communicate needs clearly

Reasoning Ability:

  • Understands competitive marketplace and pursues white space opportunities
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload with multiple deadlines
  • Self-starter can work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to fully understand their own brand DNA within the full umbrella of Macy’s private brand assortment & make decisions accordingly.

Other Skills:

  • Develop and coach Assistant/Associate CAD Designers
  • Proficiency in design software
  • Strong color sense/print sense. Ability to hand paint, and illustrate as needed.
  • Must have ability to view and differentiate the color spectrum.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Suite, Koledo, Procreate
  • Inspires motivates and influences the behavior of others to drive high performance
