Job Description Summary
BASIC FUNCTION :

In collaboration with faculty, develop, deliver, and assess high quality and effective undergraduate laboratory curriculum in human anatomy and physiology. Develop and deliver high quality and effective pedagogy curriculum for graduate (GTA) and undergraduate (UTA) teaching assistants including development of training materials, conducting training sessions, and assessment of training. Evaluation of graduate teaching assistants including administering online evaluations (custom evaluation and IDEAS), performing classroom observations, meeting with TA to discuss performance, developing a plan for TA improvement and providing a written performance evaluation. Manage the operation of the undergraduate human anatomy and laboratories including TA assignments and scheduling. Order supplies, procure live material, procure and maintaining equipment, ensure efficient and safe laboratory operation and supervise student personnel assisting with the day-to-day operations.

Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

In collaboration with faculty, develop, deliver, and assess high quality and effective undergraduate laboratory curriculum in human anatomy and physiology.

Train and supervise graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants whose duties involve the operation of anatomy and physiology laboratory courses.

Instruct and supervise teaching assistants in the discharge of their duties and responsibilities for each laboratory, including pedagogy, laboratory procedures, quiz development and grading, and the need for consistency in instruction and grading between sections.

Schedule Teaching Assistants for laboratory sections and exam proctoring in conjunction with the laboratory course instructors and Department Chair. Work with other campus partners to facilitate tutoring (Academic Enhancement Center) and testing (Academic Testing Center). Organize/schedule teaching assistants for proctoring, arrange alternate exam rooms for students with disabilities, and re-distribute graded lecture exams.

Design and deliver an annual workshop for new CELS Graduate Teaching Assistants and instruct the course (BIO 498) for undergraduate teaching assistants in human anatomy and human physiology courses.

Participate in the development, distribution, and analysis of student evaluations of teaching, and, in conjunction with course instructors, conduct classroom observations; provide feedback on teaching effectiveness to teaching assistants; draft summary reports. Discuss methods to improve course performance with teaching assistants and students.

Notify new teaching assistants of assignments and reporting structure.

Draft letters of recommendation (for grants, awards, jobs, etc.) for graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants.

Conduct multiple weekly teaching assistant meetings for Anatomy and Physiology labs.

Oversee and maintain online quiz bank.

Develop and maintain pedagogical and support materials for labs including Brightspace site and Google Drives for TA and UTAs.

Develop and administer a knowledge exam for TAs. Assess results and develop ongoing assessments for students that do not meet the minimum.

In conjunction with the course instructors and Department Chair, supervise the registration of students in laboratory courses, and maintain course rosters and grades records.

Monitor student success by reviewing student’s earned grades and communicating with campus partners (Early Alert, Disability Access, and Inclusion) about student issues. Provide emergency cover in teaching for A&P labs, as needed (i.e., absence or inability of a teaching assistant to cover.)

Oversee equipment inventory and maintenance, biological and chemical waste disposal, and biohazard safety.

Promote good laboratory practices.

Oversee the acquisition and preparation of solutions, reagents, specimens, equipment, and supplies for the efficient and safe operation of human anatomy and physiology.

Attend conferences and workshops for professional development.

Provide outreach tours and programs for K-12 schools and URI Foundation donors.

Provide support during A&P related faculty searches.

Interview potential A&P TAs and work closely with the Chair during selection process.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Perform additional duties as required.

LICENSES , TOOLS , AND EQUIPMENT :

Personal computers, printers; word processing, database and spreadsheet software; equipment routinely used in anatomy and physiology laboratories.

Required Qualifications
REQUIRED:

1. Master’s degree in biology or related field.

2. Minimum of one year of experience teaching human anatomy & physiology labs.

3. Demonstrated familiarity with modern pedagogical approaches in biology (such as the implementation of current approaches to student learning, classroom management, lesson plan development and student evaluation).

4. Demonstrated experience supervising undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants.

5. Demonstrated ability to accurately follow detailed written and oral instructions pertaining to the safe and effective operation, care, and maintenance of anatomy and physiology laboratories.

6. Demonstrated ability to plan and maintain inventories of equipment and supplies for anatomy and physiology laboratories.

7. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

8. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

9. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED:

1. Minimum of one semester of high school or college level human anatomy & physiology teaching or teaching certificate.
