V2X Aerospace Solutions is seeking a Software Engineering Department Manager who is passionate about leading a team of software engineers and supervisors who are committed to making our customer’s missions successful. The Software Engineering Department performs software design, development, integration, and test activities, frequently working within an agile environment, in the development of products across multiple domains and multiple technologies. The Software Engineering Department Manager is responsible for the performance and development of the engineers in the department. This includes defining and managing necessary skill competency models and gap closure plans. Engineers in the department work in all system life cycle phases to include acquisition, proposal, planning, design, implementation, integration, verification, validation, production, delivery, operations, maintenance, and disposal. Their responsibilities are to develop high quality software solutions to exceed customer needs.

Responsibilities and scope include:

  • Leadership and management of approximately 80-120 Software engineers located mainly in Indianapolis.
  • Delivery of customer commitments for the software engineering performance on programs within the department, and the coaching of team leaders within the department to achieve program goals.
  • Partnering with Chief Engineers, Chief Technologist, and other Engineering Discipline Department Managers to deliver high quality proposals and meet business and customer commitments in our program results.
  • Supporting career development of the individuals in the Software Engineering Department through technical and leadership training, program rotations for exposure to a broad set of customers and technologies, and performance feedback to foster individual & career growth.
  • Performing workforce planning to meet program and project requirements. Including the assignment of personnel to meet program needs and hiring/recruiting to support department and business growth objectives.
  • Perform strategic planning of software development resource needs including toolsets, infrastructure, methodologies, and personnel skillsets.
  • Supporting Engineering improvement initiatives to include innovation, technologies, and methodologies.
  • Facilitating data integrity, collection, analysis, and reporting of all required metrics.
  • Delivering weekly and monthly reports detailing engineering highlights and key employee accomplishments.
  • Managing to Department overhead budgets including employee training, travel, relocation, morale events and computer / mobile assets.
  • Defining, implementing, and training software development and management processes.
  • Working closely with program and business area managers to ensure customer satisfaction and business alignment. Interfacing with customers and users to build relationships and develop roadmaps of solutions to meet their needs.
  • Maintaining a professional attitude, to serve as an example to the team, with team members, other functional organizations, internal and external customers.

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 12 years of related engineering experience working in the DoD development industry.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience as a Section / Line Manager.
  • Minimum of 5+ years in applying / managing Agile development practices / teams
  • Ability to manage a large multilevel organization of engineers (100+).
  • Ability to manage, train and mentor 8-10 Department staff and Front Line Managers.
  • Very strong organizational and team development skills
  • Proven ability to lead an engineering team through the acquisition, proposal, and program execution phases of the system lifecycle
  • Demonstrated knowledge of other related engineering disciplines (e.g. System Engineering, Specialty Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Configuration Management, Quality, Cybersecurity)
  • Experience briefing (both written and oral) effectively to all levels of the organization, from peers to senior management
  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management.
  • Familiarity with Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI) process standards.
  • Current in the technologies, methodologies, processes, and tools used in software development with a demonstrated track record of deploying these on projects.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret clearance.

Desired Skills:

  • Master’s Degree in Software Engineering, or other relevant technical discipline.
  • Experience bidding and oversight of Firm Fixed Price (FFP) programs.
  • Experience working on international programs.
  • Experience as a Chief Engineer
  • Experience in developing Basis of Estimate (BOE)s for FAR 15.2 compliant proposals
  • Experience in capture management: create/reviewing RFPs, SOWs, BOEs, tech volumes, proposals
  • Experience engineering pursuit/proposal leader
  • Existing DOD Secret Clearance
  • Experience in software design and implementation in embedded systems for DoD platforms

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics and 12+ years of relevant experience - or
  • Master’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics and 10+ years of relevant experience
