United Health Services is seeking a Social Worker MSW to join our Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program in Binghamton, NY. This is a benefits-eligible position.

Social Worker MSW Overview

Within a high-intensity emergency department setting, or while providing services of the Mobile Team, and or Medical Behavioral Health Evaluations, provides bio-psychosocial mental health assessments and crisis intervention services to patients of all ages including their families/support system. Under the clinical supervision of the RN Team Leader, provides for medical needs. The LMSW shares professional responsibility in assessment, diagnosing and family therapeutic crisis intervention and knowledge of community resources with other interdisciplinary team members. Recommends treatment plan to physician, demonstrating knowledge of mental hygiene laws, DSM V diagnosis, common psychiatric medications, and community resources.

Social Worker MSW Key Responsibilities and Expectations

Interviews individuals referred for psychiatric/mental health assessments. Completes psychosocial and mental status evaluations under general supervision and documents in the medical record. As a Mobile Team member, understands and complies with OMH 9.58 Transportation Law. Provide interim visits as needed.

Interacts with individuals, families, and other agencies in a cooperative and effective manner to determine the best treatment plan and outcomes. Understands and respects patient rights and confidences as outlined by HIPAA Laws and UHS policy and procedures.

Answers and responds to crisis line phone calls and documents.

Makes recommendations for treatment, admission or discharge planning and follow-up, with the consultation of the Emergency Department M.D. and/or the psychiatrist covering CPEP. Collaborative information is obtained and provided to Primary Care Provider, outpatient treatment providers and community agencies.

Continues basic data gathering (i.e., vital signs) and obtains basic lab requests (i.e., urine samples) under RN clinical supervision, as well as reports any abnormalities to the RN and Emergency Department physician.

Assists with personal hygiene and grooming tasks ensuring comfort and health safety. Documents all interventions appropriately. Screens for chemical dependency services, contacts appropriate providers and coordinates treatment referrals.

Provides assessment and intervention for suspected abuse neglect as appropriate, including mandated reporting to the State.

Identifies learning needs of patient/family/support systems, providing education in medication use and compliance, treatment compliance, specific mental illness diagnosis and importance of follow-up care for positive outcomes. Provide education to schools and community agencies as requested. Participate in relevant community meetings as requested.

Advocate with referral sources, attend community meetings to advocate/support the patient and to assist with the development of a community plan.

Completes statistical logs, computer data entry, referral summaries and other documentation as requested.

Initiates and maintains appropriate and accurate documentation as required by UHS policy and procedure.

Participates in providing and maintaining a safe environment, including personal searches for dangerous items. Documents inventory of patient belongings.

Utilizes all CPI principles in verbal de-escalation, physical restraint (appropriate to age), 4 point restraint and maintaining a safe environment in all situations, under the clinical supervision of a CPI trained RN. Initiates and maintains appropriate and accurate documentation as required by UHS policy and procedure

Position Qualifications

Education/Experience

Minimum Required:
Master’s degree in Social Work

Preferred:
Previous experience in a clinical setting requiring knowledge of DSM V and CPI crisis intervention training.
Previous experience in a mental health setting for children, adolescents, adult and/or geriatric populations

License/Certification

Minimum Required:
NYS Licensed Master Social Work (LMSW)

Preferred:
NYS Licensed Clinical Social Worker with R certification (LCSW-R)
