Summary

A skilled laborer performs various manual tasks in support of the work of skilled tradespeople, including commercial carpenters. These tasks require some specialized skills (e.g., basic understanding of construction plans and specifications) and the use of hand and power tools and hoisting equipment in general construction and maintenance activities.

Essential Functions/Job Tasks

• Cut and install construction materials under the direction of a skilled tradesperson
• Assist with layout of materials for installation
• Select the appropriate construction material, tools, and equipment for installation under the direction of a skilled tradesperson – move materials and equipment to work locations where they are needed
• Load and unload construction supplies from trucks both manually and with the use of equipment
• Operate various pieces of construction equipment (e.g., forklift, scissor lift, skid steer) in accordance with company procedures and safety regulations
• Follow all safety procedures on the job site and report problems immediately to management
• Maintain a safe and clean job site by handling materials and storing them properly, picking up and removing all tools and equipment when not in use, and securing the job site on a daily basis

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

Workers in this position lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and perform strenuous physical labor under a variety of field conditions. Workers lift, push, pull, and carry materials and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The position requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.

Position Type

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 40 hours a week. Employees are paid weekly.

Preferred Experience

• Skilled laborers typically have 1-2 years of onsite construction experience
• Proficient in the care and use of a variety of hand and power tools common to commercial construction
• Some knowledge of the practices and procedures involved in commercial carpentry and the building trade
• Please note: this position will be working in the secure area at Peterson Space Force Base. The Federal contract requires that all workers pass a background check and 10-panel drug screen for badge access.
