SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform a wide range of heavy housekeeping duties to maintain the facility in an orderly, sanitary and aesthetically pleasing condition to ensure a clean, safe, healthy environment for all patients, visitors and staff. Responsible for the timely, courteous, and competent services rendered in a safe manner.
  • Clean patient rooms, operating rooms, clinics, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, bathrooms, locker rooms, air vent ducts, walls, windows, showers, grounds and other work areas so that health standards are met. Maintain assigned area free from dirt, dust and other visible soils.
  • Replenish soap, paper towels and toilet tissue in their proper containers throughout the facilities.
  • Perform general cleaning tasks such as but not limited to trash, biohazard removal, dusting, wet wiping, glass cleaning, vacuuming, spotting, polishing and mopping.
  • Gather and discard trash and medical waste daily including: emptying trash receptacles and relining with appropriate liners, cleaning waste containers and removing garbage to trash compactors or the appropriate accumulation point.
  • Perform floor care including; sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, or polishing floors, using brooms, mops, or powered scrubbing and waxing machines. Clean carpets and rugs by methods such as vacuuming, shampooing, and brushing.
  • Perform terminal cleaning procedures of patient rooms and prepare room for new occupant; follow isolation procedures in isolation rooms. Ensure patient rooms are stocked with appropriate items prior to patient's admission.
  • Remove soiled linens and place in specified bags or containers.
  • Strict adherence to the standard procedures (such as isolation procedures, emergency spills, and blood borne pathogens) of the Environmental Services and Infection Control Departments are vital. Practice infection control, asepsis techniques and isolation procedures in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
  • Immediately report hazardous conditions which can endanger the well-being of patients, visitors and hospital staff to the appropriate personnel.
  • Comply with federal and state law and accrediting and licensing agencies at all times, to include but not limited to, Joint Commission and federal compliance regulations.
  • Utilize excellent customer service skills at all times.
  • Notify the appropriate health care personnel of patient care requests in a timely manner as appropriate.
  • Use appropriate procedures for mixing and usage of chemicals.
  • Hang and remove drapes and curtains.
  • Remove graffiti with removing solvents. Notify supervisor if paint over is required.
  • Maintain house cleaning supplies and housekeeping cupboard, replenishing supplies from housekeeping storage as required. Keep carts well-stocked, clean, and tidy. Assure housekeeping equipment is safely stored at the end of shift.
  • Assist in the loading, unloading and storage of supplies. Transport housekeeping supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure that mechanical and electrical equipment is in safe and proper working order before use; report malfunctioning equipment to the department director.
  • Consult with superior regarding situations needing specific attention or follow-up.
  • Take immediate action, as appropriate, to reduce and eliminate recognized safety risks and document the incident to department supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications


Ability to read and write English and to understand and carry out simple instructions.
