The Discovery Biotherapeutics team at BMS seeks to understand the structure and function of complex molecules such as bispecific antibodies, antibody drug conjugates and endogenous proteins in order to optimize their utility as therapeutic agents. We collaborate with biology and translational scientists imbedded in the Thematic Research Centers in order to prosecute Targets and Biological pathways with disease modifying potential. By using a blend of internal and external technologies and capabilities, we work to discover and deliver first-in-class as well as best-in-class molecules that warrant clinical evaluation for patient benefit.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lab Automation Engineer to join the Discovery Biotherapeutics group and partner with our high throughput protein production team to expand our capabilities and implement AI/ML driven discovery initiatives. The candidate is expected to support a team of automation scientists and independently work on and build out additional capabilities to perform protein production and cell-based assays in multiple automated workflows.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with scientists to develop, optimize, and implement new automated workflows and systems for the production, characterization and testing of biotherapeutic candidate proteins.
  • Perform lab automation operations including protocol design, error recovery, point-teaching, editing, order scheduling, run execution etc. in Cellario, Solutions, Biomek, Sami and Momentum software.
  • Assist scientists with operation of automation platforms, providing training and error-recovery support as needed
  • Work in a matrix environment to support automated processes and systems across the Discovery Biotherapeutics organization and to develop automated methods for new processes
  • Explore and evaluate new automation and liquid handling technologies relevant to the needs of the group
  • Engage a network of automation scientists and engineers across the BMS organization to identify new technologies and opportunities for collaboration
  • Manage equipment scheduling, service contracts and regular equipment preventative maintenance
  • Excellent written and oral skills are necessary.
  • Accomplish goals under project team timelines.
  • Semi-annual travel to NJ site

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline (biomedical, robotics, computer science or related field) and 7+ years of academic / industry experience
  • Or Master's Degree in an engineering discipline (biomedical, robotics, computer science or related field) and 5+ years of academic / industry experience
  • Or PhD in an engineering discipline (biomedical, robotics, computer science or related field) and 2+ years of academic / industry experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS or MS in an engineering discipline (biomedical, robotics, computer science or related field) with 5+ years experience in programming and maintaining lab automation or BS/MS in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Biology with 5+ years of relevant automation experience
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming
  • Experience working with service engineers to troubleshoot and maximize system uptime
  • Knowledgeable in instrument qualification processes
  • Excellent time management, interpersonal and communication skills including an ability to communicate effectively with scientists that have limited automation knowledge
  • Fast learner, adaptable and able to work effectively in a cross functional team environment
  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency and under tight deadlines.
  • Hands-on experience using lab automation to support protein production or cell culture related workflows
  • Experience with liquid handling platforms such as Lynx, Perkin-Elmer Janus, Hamilton Microlab Vantage/STAR, Tecan Fluent etc
  • Experience with lab automation scheduling software and robotic systems such as HighRes Cellario, Hamilton’s Venus and Instinct V
  • Experience with cell culture and routine molecular biology techniques
