The Team

The Diagnostics Program is a fully functioning team that reports to the Director of Enterics, Diagnostics, Genomics, & Epidemiology (EDGE). We strive to improve the development and use of diagnostics for infectious diseases, and to develop low-cost and optimized approaches to pathogen surveillance in LMICs. Guided by the burden of disease and the threat of pandemics and disease outbreaks, we develop diagnostics and tools for detection and surveillance of pathogens for delivery to our target populations. Surveillance tools in development include tools for pathogen detection and surveillance from clinical samples to optimize global and local disease detection, mapping and surveillance for outbreak and endemic pathogens. Our Diagnostics strategy includes supporting the development and regulatory approval of diagnostic tests, systems and manufacturing processes for priority global health use cases, including diseases such as TB, HIV, malaria and various neglected tropical diseases, as well as syndromic illnesses (such as respiratory disease or sexually transmitted infections) and health conditions (such as pregnancy and newborn care). This position reports to the Deputy Director of the Diagnostics program.

Your Role

Strategically develop and manage a complex portfolio of grants and contracts focused on diagnostic product development and innovation of diagnostic technologies and manufacturing to support the objectives of our Global Health division and disease focused strategy programs. As a key advisor on strategy initiatives, contribute to the continued development of the team’s strategic vision, while partnering closely with team leadership to set and implement the overall strategy and goals for the team.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage a complex portfolio of grants and contracts including reviewing letters of inquiry and grant proposals and provide clear, concise and insightful written analyses and recommendations for funding.
  • Work collaboratively to develop integrated product development plans and long-term portfolio execution plans, including identification and assessment of risks, aligned with the high-level strategy of the Diagnostics program and PST teams.
  • Work with the Deputy Director and Director of EDGE, as well as the disease-area strategy teams, to develop strategies to translate emerging diagnostic technology platforms to be applicable for LMICs across different disease areas.
  • Internally lead diagnostic technology exploration, product development in TB and HIV and cross-platform exploration.
  • Work closely with grantees as thought partners, to encourage and guide the funded programs and ensure successful completion of our funded work.
  • Engage with grantees, consultants and other partners to build alignment and collaboration, in order to maximize impact of projects and ensure grants are meeting strategy goals. This may include site visits, providing operational guidance and convening meetings of key stakeholders.
  • Prepare and write briefs and synthesize existing literature. Provide written analysis of key topics related to diagnostics product and technology innovations to Foundation management. SPO will be encouraged to stay up to date on the status and progress of priority R&D initiatives related to diagnostics, often by building relationships and maintaining working relationships with subject matter experts and other leaders in the field.
  • Collaborate with Foundation colleagues in related program areas to take advantage of cross-sector grant making opportunities.
  • Represent the foundation to key program-related external constituencies, as appropriate, on committees related to area of expertise and responsibilities of the position.
  • 15% of time may be allocated to other relevant projects within the broader Diagnostics program or EDGE team portfolio.

Your Experience

  • Advanced degree desired, technical professional with minimum of 10+ years of private sector / industry / diagnostic regulatory affairs experience in in vitro diagnostics at the product and/or portfolio level.
  • Experience assessing new technologies and approaches as well as matching novel technologies with biomedical or public health applications
  • Experience in leading product through from early development to regulatory licensure, including strong familiarity with IVD quality management systems required for FDA approval (QSR) and CE-marking (ISO 13485)
  • Solid understanding and / or specific knowledge of several elements of product and / or service development and launch (e.g., discovery, development, commercial launch). Diagnostics experience required
  • Ability to effectively manage relationships with key internal stakeholders within the matrixed organization
  • Strong oral and written communications
  • Strong meeting and relationship facilitation and negotiating skills
  • Experience working on teams with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds
  • Ability to travel up to 25% time, domestically and internationally

Other Attributes

  • Experience working in infectious diseases and/or global health
  • Experience working in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings
  • Understanding of diagnostic procurement in low- and middle-income Countries including India and Africa

The typical salary range for this role is $144,200 to $267,800 USD. The exact offer will be determined by a variety of factors such as the candidate’s individual skills, qualifications, and experience relative to the requirements of the role.
