Reporting to the Associate Vice President of People and Workplace Culture, the Senior Director of People and Workplace Culture (PWC) functions as Chief of Staff and oversees a wide array of HR initiatives, projects and communications delegated by the AVPPWC in support of the strategic priorities of the college. The Senior Director manages the administrative operations of the office of the AVP OPWC and serves as a key point of contact for internal and external campus partners and stakeholders working with the AVP PWC. The Senior Director will be a collaborative partner that demonstrates both personal and professional integrity. They are transformative, collaborative, flexible and creative but can also be a hands-on problem solver with a track record of designing and delivering customer-focused services modeled on best practices. The Senior Director will serve as a mentor, resident expert, business partner and strategic advisor to the organization to ensure alignment of policies, processes, technology, and exceptional quality service. The Senior Director is a member of the PWC leadership team, and collaborates with the AVP PWC, SLCC Leadership team, staff, and campus partners to advance he strategic, administrative, and operational excellence initiatives of PWC and the college.
The Senior Director of PWC will be a champion for employees, and someone who deeply understands compliance, law, and equity. They will partner with the AVP for People & Workplace Culture and other PWC team members to develop and execute operations focused on advancing our strategic goals. This individual will be deeply dedicated to employee well-being, and the value of people to the Salt Lake Community College mission. This individual will foster an equitable and inclusive workplace culture with a clear focus on employee engagement and a sense of belonging.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Operations (Budget, Data, Policy, Systems, Strategy):
  • Keep track of legislative actions that may impact PWC.
  • Oversee the daily administrative operations for the office of the AVP PWC, including providing leadership oversight for the office and PWC staff.
  • Collaborates with AVP for PWC; leads PWC Operations in designing and regularly assessing and updating the PWC vision, goals and strategic plan
  • Ensures PWC staff understands and supports the vision and are actively working toward accomplishing goals
  • Work closely with PWC leaders and the office of data science and analytics to collect and coordinate aggregate people data and translate those data into insights through data analysis that drives deliberate action plans at the appropriate levels
  • In collaboration with the AVP for People & Workplace Culture, oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of the PWC strategic action plan
  • Directs a process of organizational planning and development that evaluates structure and human capital forecasting
  • Assist college leadership in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to People & Workplace Culture
  • Recommends, develops and executes new approaches, policies, and procedures relating to continuous improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.


Leadership & Management of HR Strategic Initiatives & Projects:
  • Serves as key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders working with the AVP PWC, particularly on the development and execution of the PWC strategic plan and associated projects designed to advance the goals, objectives, and priorities of the office of the AVP PWC.
  • Position will lead and manage high priority initiatives and projects that reflect the AVP PWC’s strategic vision and mission for PWC.
  • Conducts research, analyze findings, and develop recommendations and comprehensive implementation plans to ensure that projects and associated communication and training plans are effectively managed, delivered, and foster high levels of engagement by involving the appropriate PWC staff, campus partners and stakeholders.
  • Ensure meetings and activities are designed to advance the AVP PWC’s goals and objectives.
  • Participate in senior level discussions and decision-making, presenting relevant information, tracking deliberations, decisions, and action plans as well as drafting reports, communications, and other materials, including those presented to the Cabinet and other senior leaders.
  • Provides the AVP PWC with appropriate and timely updates regarding the progress of various PWC lead initiatives, including applicable metrics and HR data analytics and visualization reports.
  • Role model strong leadership and management practices to develop others
  • Maintain a big-picture perspective; able to link programs, activities, and communications in ways that support a cohesive employee experience.
  • Represent PWC in the absence of the AVP for PWC
  • Lead with a deep commitment to applying a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens to all people, processes, and initiatives.

Communications (Internal/External PWC Presence):
  • Lead and develop all communication planning for the office of the AVP PWC, to include collaboration with the PWC leadership team and campus partners to create and implement PWC strategic communications initiatives utilizing a variety of communications mediums.
  • Ensure that all communications align with the priorities and messaging of the AVP PWC.
  • Engage with campus partners and constituents to promote transparency and ensure highly effective and collaborative working relationships are developed and maintained in support of PWC culture focused on operational excellence.
  • Develop presentations, remarks, correspondence, and other communications for the AVP PWC, including meeting materials for key AVP PWC lead meetings, workgroups and/or projects.
  • Responsible for coordinating and developing informative employee communications designed to keep employees and management knowledgeable about people initiatives.
  • Oversees and coordinates PWC website and other online presence.

Partnerships & Collaboration:
  • Develop processes and build partnerships to foster and support people and workplace initiatives at SLCC.
  • Builds critical relationships with peers and other partners to ensure the people and workplace culture programs are highly supportive, inclusive and aligned with the College’s Mission, Vision and Values.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of broad experience in Human Resources/people-focused work.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience is also required.
  • Experience designing, developing and supporting programs, policies and practices.
  • Experience in project planning, development, implementation and assessment.
  • Experience managing budgets.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in in human resources management, management, industrial psychology, organizational development or a related discipline.
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR certification preferred.
  • Experience in capturing HR/People metrics and producing analytics for use by managers for employee decisions.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Experience leading change initiatives, including the skills to anticipate and champion change.
  • Experience with HR/People technology, including implementation.

  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Skill in examining and refining operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
