The Sports Field Worker is responsible for the general repair and maintenance of the Park Districts athletic fields

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Valid State of Illinois drivers license and clean driving record
• Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test
• Ability to work from written and oral instructions
• Most tasks are performed with little or no direct supervision
• Ability to operate necessary equipment, i.e. tractors, lining equipment, trucks, ball field machines
• Previous experience in athletic field maintenance or related field is recommended
• Attend Champaign Park District blood borne pathogen training within two weeks of hire
• POSITIVE "CAN-DO" TEAM ATTITUDE

SUPERVISION

The Sports Field Worker reports directly to the Grounds Supervisor

TRAINING CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH CHAMPAIGN PARK DISTRICT

• Anyone who will be driving a Champaign Park District vehicle will need to complete and pass a driving test from one of our certified Champaign Park District trainers

CLASSIFICATION

• Non-Exempt, hourly
• Seasonal position long season (April - November) and short season (May - August)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of the public, fellow employees, and themselves
• Use District tools according to safety guidelines
• Operate mowers, string trimmers, edges, and other powered equipment, as well as a variety of hand tools
• Clean outdoor facilities
• Perform field maintenance duties as required
• Fill holes, drag and line diamonds and fields
• Install and remove fencing
• Remove water and dry fields after rain
• Measure and mark athletic fields
• Mow specified areas
• Perform unskilled maintenance repairs as needed
• Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of the public, fellow employees and self
• Check all equipment and supplies and report necessary repairs to supervisor
• Available to work evenings and weekends upon request

• Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles assigned to the athletic field crew as required by the Special Projects Supervisor.
• Other duties as assigned

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATONS

• The activities required to fulfill the duties of this position are significantly physical in nature. These activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Kneeling
    • To install base anchors, bases, and string lines. Many other duties
  • Lifting
    • Up to 70lbs alone and over 70lbs with assistance
  • Forearms
    • Operation of hand tools, string trimmers, power hedge trimmers and edger. Lift and manipulate lumber, landscape timers, and 55-gallon garbage cans
  • Handwork
    • Shovel work and use of a wide range of hand tools all requiring gripping and controlling motions that are often repetitious
  • Twisting
    • Most examples listed above and other duties
  • Push/Pull
    • Raking, moving equipment, tractors and other duties.
  • Sitting
    • While operating equipment and vehicles over rough terrain for extended periods of time

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

• Work activity may occur in outside weather conditions including extremes of heat, cold, wet, and dry and may also occur on rough or inclined terrain. Any one of these endeavors may occur for an entire workday or for several workdays in a row.
• Safety while performing all duties is an important concern.
• Teamwork and mechanical assists for heavy lifting (over 70lbs) is a department policy
