About the Department of Conservation and Recreation:
The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency, and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails and parkways.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Park Interpreter.


Responsibilities:

The Park Interpreter's primary responsibility is to help visitors find meaning in the natural and cultural resources of DCR's facilities. They perform various interpretive, educational, and administrative tasks in the operation of visitor services and interpretation. Tasks include staffing an information desk/kiosk, providing visitor information and orientation, researching, developing, and presenting a variety of interpretive and recreational programs that reflect the natural, cultural, and historical themes of the park. Coordination of special events and programs independently or in partnership with other public or private organizations is required.


Unique to the Park Interpreter position at Damon Road is the focus on interpretive research, writing, and programming support. This position requires significant time and skills dedicated to online research, reading, writing, and organization. The position includes significant communication responsibilities via phone, email, and online meeting platforms. This position also supports select interpretive special events at DCR state parks statewide, as well as providing visitor services, information, and logistical support at the DCR’s annual Big E (Eastern States Exposition) booth.


Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants must be at least eighteen years old, possess a basic knowledge of natural and cultural history, have experience working with the public, hold solid research, writing, and communication skills, with the ability to follow oral and written instructions, and the ability to work in a team setting. Applicants must be comfortable using a computer and have proficiency with use of the internet and Microsoft Office suite including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel. Current valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.


Location:

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is a major steward of the commonwealth’s natural and cultural resources. The DCR State Parks Division is responsible for over 440,000 acres in its 440 parks and properties state-wide. The state parks are home to significant natural resources, endangered landscapes, cultural and historic landmarks, and offer tremendous recreational and educational opportunities.


This Park Interpreter position is assigned to Ct River Greenway State Park, Damon Road office, 136 Damon Road, Northampton, MA. This is a forty hour a week work schedule, which may include weekends, holidays, evening shifts, and periodic driving to off-site assignments.


Employment Information:

Most positions begin early to mid-May and end between early September and mid-October. Park Interpreters work a forty-hour week (which includes nights, weekends, and holidays). The salary is $975.59 bi-weekly; employees are paid bi-weekly. Benefits may be available for long-term positions. Uniforms and training are provided, park housing is not.


Qualifications

This requisition will remain open until filled; however, first consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.


Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in interpreting, recreation programming or environmental education in a public or private agency, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.


Substitutions:

I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in recreation or park management, park interpretation, recreation programming or environmental education may be substituted for the required experience.*

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
