The Opportunity
WSDOT is eager to hire an individual who has a passion for creative solutions, innovation, and can provide success in collaborative efforts to serve as our next Scoping Assistant supporting our Northwest Region (NWR) Program Development Office. This position will help manage, coordinate, and monitor the development of project scopes, schedules, and cost estimates for NWR Improvement and Preservation projects in the Highway Construction Program (HCP). From fieldwork for site investigation and data collection, to crafting a scope and estimate for a buildable highway construction project – this position is an excellent career start for an innovative engineer. What to Expect
This position may require field work which may include traversing uneven ground, conducting reviews during poor weather conditions and alongside busy highways. Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) must be worn as required for field conditions.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Scoping Assistant will:
  • Analyze data and determine conformance with current design standards.
  • Apply engineering guidelines and judgment during development of scoping documents.
  • Read and comprehend engineering reports/analysis and develop solutions to address deficiencies.
  • Utilize data and information to assess and evaluate scoping alternatives, form accurate conclusions, and make decisions.
  • Develop ArcGIS maps and graphics.
  • Utilize the WSDOT Design Manual, Standard Specifications, Standard Plans, Plans Preparation Manual, and other manuals or resources for development and documentation of project scopes and estimates.
  • Monitor, resolve issues, and track the Project Summary approval process within NW Region and HQ offices.
  • Enter and update scoping information into the Project Summary database.
  • Request updates for scoping information and ensure that the information matches the information in the Project Summary database.
  • Utilize engineering tools/equipment during outside field reviews, e.g. measuring devices, calculator, survey equipment, camera.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering standards and procedures and computer engineering applications, methods, practices, and principles and effectively applies them when scoping and estimating projects.
  • Ability to assist in utilization the design manual, standard specifications, standard plans, Plans Preparation Manual, and other manuals or resources for development and documentation of project scopes and estimates.
  • The ability to perform field reviews and collect data for the purpose of scoping and estimating projects.
  • The ability to traverse unleveled ground while conducting field reviews work outside in all types of weather conditions and terrain types.
  • The ability to assist in the use data and information to assess and evaluate scoping alternatives, form accurate conclusions, and make decisions.
  • The ability to employ effective written and verbal means to document and communicate important observations and in formation to others.
  • The ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • A valid driver’s license.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Desktop Software and ArcGIS Explorer software.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite including PowerPoint and Excel.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis. Travel is typically within assigned region.
