POSITION: Registered Nurse
DEPARTMENT: Family Birthplace
REPORTS TO: Family Birthplace director

Position Description:
Responsible for assessing, planning, and providing nursing care to meet individual patient needs. Assessment will include a physical, psychological, and spiritual evaluation. Responsible for coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the care delivered to assigned patients. Provides safe patient care and has the ability to recognize labor and delivery patterns. Accurately completes and documents assessment. Conducts follow-up patient/family assessment. Assess/interprets laboratory/pharmacological, diagnostic tests, patient/family perceptions and physical assessment data in formulating nursing diagnosis. Mutually establishes realistic expected outcomes with patient/family. Implementing the plan of care. Evaluates and updates nursing plan of care to reflect changes in priority needs. Monitors patient’s physical condition through ongoing observation and assessment. Completing documentation prior to end of shift. Takes an active role in teaching patient about self care and about care if the neonate. Presenting and evaluating effectiveness/non-effectiveness of the discharge teaching for the patient/family response and then initiating changes. Seeks and attends clinical learning experiences that extend his/her knowledge base. Utilizes and shares information from conferences or workshops which he/she attended. Maintains annual requirements including: ACLS, BLS, PALS, fetal monitoring, breastfeeding clasess, NRP, STABLE, Mock Codes, Unit Specific Competencies, Staff Meetings, and CEUs. Actively participating in preceptor program for students and new employees. Actively participates in hospital Performance Improvement Team. Assumes responsibility for assignment of quality controls in compliance with established unit routines (i.e., narcotic count, crash cart check, code team members, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

· BSN (recommended)

· Valid Texas Registered Nursing License

· ACLS, PALS, NRP, STABLE (within 6 months of hire)

· Fetal monitoring

· Breastfeeding classes

· RN-C (recommended)

· One year current clinical experience

Knowledge and Skills:

· Must have good communication, and leadership skills

· Must keep up with current evidence based practice

· Must have good oral and writing skill and knowledge of computer software

· Makes patient care assignment in a fair, safe and consistent manner when in charge of the unit. Makes shift assignments as well as assigns new admissions to the nursing staff according to patient acuity.

· Handles constructive criticism and position specific coaching/training.

· Identifies and communicates needs for change in policies or procedures to appropriate supervisors.

· Implements appropriate channels of communication when concerned about questionable nursing or medical care.

· Initial assessments and care plan development is completed within 2 hours of admission.

· Utilizes the nursing process incorporating laboratory, pharmacological, diagnostic tests, patient/significant other perceptions, and physical assessment data to formulate a dynamic, ongoing plan of care.

Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, communicate in English, alphabetize, and perceive depth.
