Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University. BSA salutes our veterans and active military members with careers that leverage the skills and unique experience they gained while serving our country. Our organization fully supports service members transitioning from active duty to civilian life and pledge’s our commitment to actively hire veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Military personnel who have been formally trained or have relevant experience obtained while in service may meet educational requirements and are encouraged to apply for job opportunities at BSA.

Organizational Overview

The Cold QCD Group in the Physics Department at BNL is focused on the cold QCD / spin program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the world’s only polarized proton collider. With the recent successful completion of the STAR Forward Upgrade, we have built a strong physics program around the multidimensional structure of the proton and related topics of Quantum Chromodynamics. The group is closely linked to the operation of the STAR experiment with responsibilities of several subsystems, specifically the Forward Calorimeters and global detectors. In addition, we provide the online support for the Polarimeters which is vital for the success of the whole RHIC program. We also have close connections to the local theory group as well as the Collider/Accelerator Department and serve as host for many students and postdocs from collaborating universities, during RHIC operations and beyond. BNL has been chosen as the site for the construction of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) and the group has close ties to the experimental part of the EIC Project.

Position Description

The Cold QCD Group in the Physics Department has an opening for a scientist to join the ongoing efforts in the RHIC Cold QCD program. You will be expected to take a leading role in the activities of the group with responsibilities in the STAR collaboration and the RHIC polarimeters. We have recently collected significant data sets with polarized high-energy proton collisions and expect to continue to collect more in the upcoming years with a wide range of unique observables and possible analyses. In addition, you will have the opportunity to mentor and train students and postdocs in an international and multicultural environment, which will be growing from RHIC to EIC in the near future.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participation in the RHIC cold QCD program in the STAR experiment and the RHIC polarimeters
  • Development and performance of analysis methods for experimental data
  • Presentation and publication of research results
  • Provide guidance and work with students and postdocs from collaborating universities

  • Ability to lead a team and work in a large international collaboration
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
  • Research experience demonstrated through a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to maintain a safe and respectful workplace environment

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with high energy hadron collider or fixed target experiments
  • Experience with physics event generator and detector simulations
  • Experience with hadron polarimetry techniques

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Domestic and international travel can be expected
  • Please express your interest via electronic application including cover letter, CV, and Research Statement as Word documents or PDF.
  • Please arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to physicsLOR@bnl.gov with a subject line referring to this job posting (Req#XXXX) and cc: Oleg Eyser (keyser@bnl.gov)
