Wilder Research currently seeks a Research Manager to lead one of our six research units. The core function of this role is to make sure there is the infrastructure and support in place so research project managers can engage in high-quality, meaningful work. The Research Manager will contribute to the vision and strategy for Wilder Research and will collaborate with other formal and informal leaders both inside and outside of Wilder Research to increase the positive impacts of Wilder Research’s work.
The Research Manager will provide supervision, support, and coaching to team members (typically 5-10 researchers) in order to enhance their effectiveness and encourage their development. The Research Manager will support team members to conduct project work and will provide consultation to team members to ensure that the work is high-quality, timely, and on-budget. They will provide subject matter expertise, consultation, and project advice as needed for specific projects and will support project design as well as the presentation and dissemination of research results to stakeholder groups and clients.
The Research Manager will also manage and coach staff to manage project and portfolio budgets in order to ensure that the team is contributing to the department’s revenue goals. This will include contributing to budget planning and development, monitoring team and project-level budgets, contributing to and supporting team members to generate revenue, and proactively addressing budget concerns.
This role will also manage and assist with community-based research and evaluation projects. Responsibilities include: project management, design of community-based research projects and program evaluations, developing data collection materials, coordinating study implementation, data interpretation, and report writing. Staff will also help prepare presentations, proposals, and other research materials.
The position will work directly with client partners, a wide range of community members, and internal research teams at Wilder Research. Job Qualifications
Manage unit and supervise staff (approximately 40%)
- Supervise staff and support the development of research staff at a variety of levels
- Develop and provide leadership to support a positive and inclusive workplace culture, effective teams, and effective leadership and decision-making processes
- Ensure high quality deliverables through quality control and assurance measures
- Provide leadership focused on delivering results and producing positive impacts from applied research and evaluation, including improving client/community stakeholder knowledge of using data to inform decisions
Conduct research and evaluation projects (approximately 60%)
- Lead social science research and evaluation projects from design through dissemination
- Create and manage budgets for research and evaluation projects that range in size from small (under $10K) to large ($1 million+)
- Develop and manage contracts
- Demonstrate cultural humility and responsiveness with community-based organizations and diverse community members
- Negotiate respectfully and effectively with clients and colleagues
- Communicate research results effectively to diverse audiences, both orally and in easy-to-understand writing
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related office software, as well as a willingness to learn applications that better facilitate our research work
To fulfill these skills, we value a mix of education and hands-on experience conducting community-based research and evaluation. For this role, a bachelor’s degree, ideally in a social science field, is required, and a master’s degree is preferred. Because this is a manager position, our ideal candidate would have 16 years of applied research experience with a bachelor’s degree, 14 years with a master’s, or 10 years with a PhD.
This position is currently remote, but partial return to site-based work is under consideration and/or may be a necessary part of project-based work.
