The Research Assistant III will be working for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine Center for Translational Medicine with the Gene Therapy/Viral Vector Core team. Under general supervision, performs complex research activities following established methods and procedures in support of the research project. The Research Assistant III assists with various experiments; testing standard research methodologies, procedures, and verbal and written instructions that will include vector cloning, propagation, and purification of high titer virus preparations.

Responsibilities include: Sterile technique as it relates to cell and tissue culture as well as bacterial culture growth; handling of large numbers of cell culture plates/flasks per week; use of selection to generate cell lines in cell culture; freezing and thawing cell lines and bacteria; testing cell lines for bacteria including mycoplasma; large and small-scale isolation of plasmid DNA from bacteria; using antibodies for fluorescent immune-histochemistry and Western blotting; analysis of plasmids by restriction enzyme digestion.

The Research Assistant III also maintains and cleans sophisticated laboratory instruments and equipment, inventories chemicals, supplies, and equipment, and instructs and assists students and lower-level technicians. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in science-related area of research and at least one year of directly related laboratory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to understand the growth rates of multiple cell lines.
  • Proficiency in methods of DNA transfection of cells in culture.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Calendar, and Google Drive
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the above-listed laboratory techniques
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess the ability to build and maintain professional relationships

This is a grant funded position.
