SUMMARY

The Reference Librarian III will provide targeted and specific reference, research, circulation, and education services to all CDC staff, regardless of location. Library public services activities include reference, mediated literature searching, circulation, CDC patrons’ training, outreach/liaison librarian services, space management, and other general information provision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following (but not limited to):

  • Provides reference and research services responding to requests for evidence-based literature in support of public health, occupational safety, and health science.
  • Staffs the reference desk and perform circulation services.
  • Schedules use of library space upon patron request.
  • Maintain accurate schedules.
  • Provides accurate and timely answers to specific research questions with source identification, working as part of a team with subject matter experts.
  • Consults with subject matter experts to provide accurate and appropriate information to best meet their research needs.
  • Develops and maintains online subject guides and bibliographies.
  • Performs literature searches/research consultations on a broad range of public health, occupational safety, and health topics using a variety of databases, including but not limited to PubMed, OVID Medline, Embassy, Scopus, Lexis/Nexis, Dialog, Global Health, CINAHL, Cochrane, PsycINFO, Sociological Abstracts, EconLit, ABI/Inform, Compendex, and non-conventional sources of grey literature.
  • Develops, conducts, optimizes, and updates literature searches in support of systematic literature reviews.
  • Provides basic and comprehensive literature searches, including rapid reviews and documenting processes.
  • Uses citation management software such as EndNote to download and manage article citations/generate documents.
  • Provides training and outreach/liaison activities on literature searching techniques, databases, and library services/tools to support the information needs of CDC scientists and researchers using current technology such as Skype.
  • Prepares course outlines/basic user manuals and materials.
  • Assists in publicizing library activities/materials through displays, bibliographies, brochures, news releases, newsletters, internet and intranet websites, etc.
  • Assists in the plans to direct and/or implement special projects involving library services, promotion, and outreach.
  • Networks/collaborates with internal and external partners to support/promote institutional output and scholarly publishing initiatives.
  • Train CDC staff on how to measure the impact of their publications.
  • Develops and sustains initiatives and services to support research and scientific endeavors by developing infrastructure tools, support systems, and foster intellectual development.
  • Identifies, accesses, acquires, and manages datasets/supplemental materials relevant to scientific endeavors and research efforts.
  • Networks/collaborates with internal and external partners to support and promote institutional output and scholarly publishing initiatives.
  • Develops and sustains expertise related to eScience and Data Management tools, industry standards, and related areas.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

This position will not have supervisory or management authority.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • ALA accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science AND
  • Minimum of two (2) as a Librarian I.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of standard library practices, precedents, and techniques shall be applied to specific cases, problems/situations relating to new work situations to precedent ones.
  • Knowledge of appropriate information technology to acquire, organize, and disseminate information on a broad range of public health, occupational safety, and health topics.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to the best professional principles/practices of online searching including search construction/strategy, search commands/syntax, index structure, use of controlled vocabularies, natural language searching, Boolean logic, truncation, adjacency, and relevance ranking related to public health, occupational safety, and health information resources.
  • Ability to apply effective communication and analytic techniques for use in conducting trainings and outreach activities.
  • Ability to develop and sustain initiatives that support and foster research, scientific endeavors, intellectual development and knowledge creation by developing tools and support systems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work will be performed in a climate controlled office environment.
  • Potential candidates will be able to pass a government/federal background check.
  • Ability to successfully pass a drug screen and background investigation.
  • Cherokee Federal has suspended it’s COVID mandate. However, it’s important to note that Cherokee Federal employees are included as covered employees in U.S. Presidential Executive Order 14042, which mandates Covid vaccines for federal contractors. Executive Order 14042 is currently not subject to enforcement by the Federal government.
