Job Summary

Coos Bay Rail Line, Inc. is hiring a Carman to inspect and repair railroad rolling freight stock in accordance with FRA & ODOT regulations, AAR rules, and company policies.

Essential Job Functions

· Inspect rolling stock for defects or evidence of wear in compliance with industry standards.

· Repair, remove and/or replace defective structural and nonstructural components of rolling stock to maximize railroad car availability.

· Fabricate, cut, and perform rough finish operations on metal and wood replacement parts; fasten and assemble car parts by riveting, bolting, welding, and other methods.

· Inspect lading for shifting loads, clearances, and compliance with ODOT & FRA regulations.

· Conduct scheduled, on demand, and pre-trip railroad car inspections and maintenance.

· Troubleshoot and problem solve technical issues.

· Safely and effectively operate electric and gas welding equipment, acetylene torches, power tools and non-power tools.

· AAR reporting and other necessary work on applicable software programs via a computer.

· Read, interpret, understand, and find written or electronic information, including information from diagrams, schematics, blueprints, graphs, and charts. Perform basic arithmetic operations.

· Maintain work areas, tools, and equipment in clean and safe order.

· Keep supervisor informed of work progress and completion. Proactively seek out next work assignments upon completion of previously assigned work.

Required Experience & Education

· 1-3 years of relevant work experience. Previous car repair experience a plus.

· Welding experience, certified welder preferred.

· High School diploma or GED.

Required Qualifications

· Ability to learn, comprehend, and retain knowledge of rolling stock, AAR rules, and FRA and ODOT Rail regulations.

· Knowledge and ability to safely operate hand and power tools and equipment without supervision.

· Ability to operate a computer, software applications, and office equipment, or the ability to learn.

· Ability to effectively troubleshoot and problem solve.

· Interpersonal/communication/customer service skills to effectively interact both verbally and in writing with coworkers, stakeholders, and customers, with courtesy, dignity, and respect.

· Ability to work alone and in a team environment by developing and maintaining good working relationships with coworkers, stakeholders, and customers.

· Understand and follow all company, state, federal, and industry safety rules, practices, and standards.

· Possess valid Class C Oregon Driver’s License, with ability to obtain a Class A Oregon Driver’s License.

Working Conditions

· Regional travel required.

· Work will be performed outside during inclement weather conditions, all shifts, and various hours.

· May be subjected to high stress situations.

· On call work as required, including nights, weekends and holidays.

· Must utilize/wear personal protective equipment as required.

Physical Requirements

· Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, reaching, reaching overhead, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, talking, hearing and seeing.

· Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

· Locations include: areas of elevation, vehicle and pedestrian traffic, enclosed and/or exposed outdoor environments, wet areas, over waterways and bridges, through/in tunnels, areas of uneven footing.
