Job description
Chai applies the power of molecular diagnostics to real-world applications. By combining our portable qPCR instruments with advanced molecular biology, we develop easy-to-use solutions for problems such as COVID surveillance, food & beverage safety, and environmental water quality. Our affordable instruments and open reagent platform are used by some of the most impactful researchers and life science companies around the world.
We're looking for a versatile molecular biologist to develop RT-qPCR reagents and assays, bring products from conception to production, and play a core role in the development of our future qPCR platforms. As many of our test kits are designed for novice users or automation platforms, usability is paramount, and you'll use advanced techniques to simplify protocols beyond typical laboratory kits.

What You'll Do

  • Develop assays for pathogens and other microbes important to human health, food & beverage production, agriculture, aquaculture, and environmental monitoring
  • Design highly sensitive, rapid assays and sample preparation processes for challenging sample types such as saliva, food, environmental water, and plants
  • Make tests kits as simple and shelf-stable as possible using lyophilization and other techniques
  • Reporting to our head of R&D, you'll provide scientific leadership within a diverse R&D team of scientists, hardware, and software engineers
  • Mentor research associates to develop their skills and support your work
  • Oversee the transfer of assays into production by creating SOPs and QC procedures, and providing technical training to sales, marketing, and support

You Have

  • A PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or similar field with 3+ years of industry experience
  • A deep understanding of qPCR, RT-qPCR, and PCR reaction dynamics
  • Strong skills in PCR primer/probe design, DNA/RNA extraction, cloning, and cell culture
  • You proudly take ownership of each aspect of the project from R&D through production, QC, and long-term stability testing
  • You’re a pro at experiment design and selecting research strategies, and can guide others to do the same
  • You can clearly explain your work to sales, marketing, support, and hardware/software engineers who don’t speak fluent “biology”
  • You're at home in the wet lab and can setup and operate a variety of scientific instruments and equipment
  • You understand how to operate under ISO 13485 quality systems and validate assays for regulatory submission such as 510(k) clearance
  • A desire to work in an early-stage, growing startup

We Offer

  • Great compensation package including generous equity
  • Robust medical, dental and vision benefits
  • 401(k) with match
  • Paid holidays and PTO
  • Fully stocked kitchen and catered weekly lunch
  • An opportunity to make your mark at a growing startup
This is an on-site position in our Santa Clara office.
We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender, gender identity or expression, or veteran status. We are proud to be an equal opportunity workplace.
