Position Title: Pump Station Operator

Department: DPW – Water Pollution Control (Pump Stations)

Employment Status: Non-Exempt; Full-Time

Salary: UCFW Laborer’s Union, Grade 6L, Step 5 – Starting at $18.00 per hour ($18.00 base hourly + $1.25 per hour for Grade 3 WWTP Operator’s license + $.50 for Grade 2 Collection Systems License)

Licenses/Certifications: Valid Class D License Required, Grade 3 WWTP License and Grade 2 Collection System License obtained within six (6) months.

SUMMARY

The City of Chicopee’s Department of Public Works – Water Pollution Control is hiring a Pump Station Operator who inspects, repairs, and maintains all pumping stations and equipment within the city. Ensures operational integrity in order to meet Federal, State, and Local requirements.

SOME ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE

• Monitors control panels and adjust valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage.
• Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to achieve optimal operating requirements.
• Operation and maintenance of; pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage.
• Collects sewage samples and conducts tests as needed.
• Operates and maintains power generating equipment to provide electricity for station.
• Inspects, cleans, paints, repairs, and maintains all pumping station equipment, vehicles, and equipment.
• Snow removal/snow plowing/snow shoveling is required any time any day from City streets and at all WPC & Pump Station Facilities.
• Adheres to all state, federal, and local safety regulations as City of Chicopee Health and Safety policies.

QUALIFICATIONS

To be minimally qualified for this position, one must meet the following criteria:

• Valid Grade D Driver’s License (required)
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Grade 3 WWTP Operator’s license or obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
• Grade 2 Collection System License or obtain within six (6) months of hire date.

This role is classified as a UFCW Laborer’s Union, Grade 6L, starting at Step 5, with a minimum starting pay of($18.00 base hourly + $1.25 per hour for Grade 3 WWTP Operator’s license + $.50 for Grade 2 Collection Systems License), with periodic step and pay increases upon continuous completion of employment with the City of Chicopee.
