Responsibilities

The Trainee (Pump) is an employee-in-training to be qualified as a Pump Maintainer I. This employee assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of valves, pipes, and connecting systems for PATH’s compressed air, discharge, and fire standpipe lines throughout tunnel and open areas. Work also involves periodic inspection of air pressure-driven pumps. The Trainee (Pump) must successfully complete a structured training program to qualify for a promotion.

NOTE: The foregoing is not exclusive and is not meant to describe all those duties, which may be assigned to a Pump Helper pursuant to the agreement between PATH and the TWU.

NOTE: Successful candidates who accept an offer for a Trainee (Pump helper) position are required to remain in the Pump section for a minimum of 24 months upon placement. Candidates may be promoted to Pump Maintainer I prior to fulfilling the 24-month requirement but MUST fulfill the 24-month requirement from the time of placement as a Trainee (Pump helper).


Qualifications:

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • One (1) year paid full-time work experience with pumps, piping, and/or plumbing. OR Trade school
  • Valid driver’s license

Selection Process

Selected qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a in the assessment process which consists of an oral interview and practical examination.


Written Test:
The Written Test will consist of test modules designed to measure the candidate’s knowledge of mechanical reasoning, reading comprehension, and basic math.

Oral/Interview Test: The interview will assess the candidate’s interest in the position, personal qualifications, skills, experience, and accomplishments as they relate to the Pump Helper position; and knowledge of on-track safety, including but not limited to foul time.

Practical Test: This will assess ability to work with hand tools associated with pump work and perform tasks that include climbing ladders and working on an open-deck lift bridge.


TEST DATE & LOCATION:
Candidates who meets the qualifications will be invited to register for written exam via email and will have 14 days to take the exam.

Interview dates and location is to be determined for those candidates who qualify on the Written Test.

The Salary for Trainee Pumps is $30.50 per hour

Pump Helper - Trainee starts at Step I - (per union contract) and get step increases.
