Summary of Responsibilities: The Public Works Supervisor manages, directs, and implements the yearly maintenance and operations of the City’s streets, stormwater infrastructure, vehicles/equipment, and City facilities under the supervision of the PW Director.


Examples of Duties: The duties and responsibilities of the Public Works Supervisor include, but are not limited to:
  • Manage staff, methods, equipment, schedules, and materials.
  • Complete the installation, repair, maintenance, and operations of all areas under the Public Works Department: streets, storm water, Public Works, vehicle maintenance, City owned facilities and properties.
  • Plan schedule, direct, and oversee the development and completion of the Public Works Department work plans and projects. Monitor workflow, oversee the inventory and ordering of materials.
  • Manage the Street system including road right-of-way clearing, street sweeping, sanding, de-icing, snow plowing, backing of shoulders, minor and major pavement repairs, striping or curb repairs/installation and painting, as well as inspect new development infrastructure, and oversee the construction of pavement management contracts and all documentation required for such projects.
  • Monitor the storm system and maintain City storm facilities, irrigation/storm ditches, detention systems, and keep a record of activities. Manage ditch cleaning, as needed. Oversee construction of minor and major stormwater projects.
  • Maintain Public Works and Administration Vehicles and keep records of vehicle/equipment inspections and scheduled maintenance.
  • Follow and enforce all safety rules and procedures for work areas, including traffic control plans, personal protective equipment, safety meetings, and monitor training schedules and keep records.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public, City staff, and outside agencies. Provide excellent customer service including responding in a timely manner to telephone calls, written requests and inquiries, meeting with citizens to resolve complaints, as well as assisting other City staff, agencies, business community, and the general public with special events or emergencies.
  • Represent the City in a professional and reliable manner at all times (on and off the clock).
  • Be able to complete special projects and perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Public Works.

Desirable Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and specifications.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all aspects of the Public Works Department.
  • Ability to plan, manage and complete projects as scheduled.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees, other departments and the public.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in Public Works or general excavating, including experience as a Foreman or Supervisor
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess (or willing to obtain in 60 days) a Class A CDL with air brakes endorsement.
  • Must have (or willing to obtain) Water Distribution and Wastewater Licensing.
  • Must be willing to submit to a physical.
  • Must be willing to submit to random drug testing.
  • Must be willing to work overtime on short notice.
  • Must participate in the Public Works on call rotation off-hours and emergency schedule.
  • Must demonstrate regular, reliable and punctual attendance.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Environment: Work is performed primarily in a field setting:
  • The worker is subject to all environmental conditions. May be protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
  • The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions, such as wind and humidity.
  • The worker is subject to extreme cold. Temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind.
  • The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
  • The worker is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
Physical: The physical activity of this position include the following, depending on the task being performed:
  • Must be able to lift 70 lbs overhead.
  • Must be able to withstand bending, squatting, and kneeling for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able and willing to climb ladders and stairs.
The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision:
  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or make general observations of facilities or structures
  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or light equipment

Compensation and Benefits:

The starting hourly pay range for this position is $23.61 - $25.03. The City provides a generous benefit program including health, dental, life insurance, short-term disability insurance, and paid vacation and sick leave. In addition to the competitive benefits package and salary, the City provides a LAGERS L-6 retirement plan with no employee contributions.
