The Public Health/Preventive Medicine Residency Program provides rigorous training to the next generation of public health physicians. Under the mentorship of agency leaders, residents play key roles in major projects, such as conducting surveillance and developing and evaluating health-promotion and disease-prevention initiatives.

  • Assists with and contributes to the design, execution, and interpretation of results of assigned short-term research investigations and analysis of specific problems in applied public health including literature reviews, survey and questionnaire design and implementation, field studies and data analysis.
  • Maintains records, writes reports, and conducts presentations.
  • Assists in the planning, coordinating, and conduct of public health surveillance system activities and epidemiological studies; assists in the collection of information for operational research studies evaluating treatment and case management strategies.
  • Attends weekly seminars on public health and preventive medicine and participates in extensive educational activities.
  • Under direct supervision, in the specialty of clinical preventive medicine, examines patients, orders or performs appropriate diagnostic tests, formulates diagnoses, and counsels patients.

Minimum Qual Requirements

Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York and current registration to practice as a Physician in the State of New York; this license and registration must be obtained within 90 days of appointment to the title; and
To be appointed directly to Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to meeting the “Qualification Requirements” under “For Assignment Level I” above, successfully completed all requirements of the first year of the Preventive Medicine Residency at an ACGME-accredited program.

**LOAN FORGIVENESS**

The federal government provides student loan forgiveness through its Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) to all qualifying public service employees. Working with the DOHMH qualifies you as a public service employee and you may be able to take advantage of this program while working full-time and meeting the program’s other requirements.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
