MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a provisional Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist License.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:
To train as a Public Health Nutritionist counseling patients on normal or therapeutic nutrition.

Level of Work:
Entry.

Supervision Received:
Close from a Public Health Nutritionist 3 or 4 (Parish Nutritionist Supervisor).

Supervision Exercised:
None.

Location of Work:
Department of Health and Hospitals; Office of Public Health.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from the Public Health Nutritionist Intern by possession of a provisional Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist license.

Differs from the Public Health Nutritionist 2 by lack of a permanent Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist license and absence of responsibility for performance of journeyman level duties.

Examples of Work

Under close and direct supervision performs the following duties:

Interprets state policy and procedures regarding the federally funded Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), the Severe Pediatric Under nutrition (SPUN) Program, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), and other nutrition programs serving as a liaison between regional and local staff to assure compliance with federal regulations.

Provides nutritional management of patients participating in the WIC and CSFP programs.

Implements the nutrition component of the Maternal and Child Health, Family Planning, and Chronic Disease Programs.

Provides assistance to paraprofessional nutrition staff including program planning, clinic schedules, and nutrition education format.

Networks with other health professionals such as private physicians/nurses in the development and implementation of interagency information/referral systems to identify patients with nutritional problems and needs.

Counsels patients on normal (health promotion) and therapeutic nutrition in health clinics and in home visits as necessary.

Performs nutritional assessments of individuals or families by evaluating anthropometric measurements, urinary and serum lab values, 24 hour recall or diet histories, and medical and social histories; develops care plans, counsels and monitors the progress of the intervention.

Interprets scientific information regarding food, nutrition, diet, and health for health professionals, agencies and the public by phone conferences, dissemination of educational material or public lectures.

Provides technical assistance and continuing education to internal and external agency personnel in specialty areas of nutrition for such programs as Children's Special Health Services, Genetics, etc. and in nutrition programs such as WIC, SPUN, and CSFP.

Provides in-service training to health unit staff on anthropometric data collection, documentation, and interpretation.

Assists in developing and participates in in-service activities for WIC paraprofessionals on nutrition and programmatic issues.

Participates in professional continuing education to maintain competency, registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and a Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist License.
