Job Summary

The Proposal Writer for Bon Appétit Management Company will support the director of communications and other members of the small communications team at this socially responsible company. We’re seeking a candidate with excellent writing and editing skills, a flexible writing voice finely attuned to nuance, strong attention to detail, and great organizational skills to focus specifically on RFP responses. Someone with a technical writing or corporate communications background, who also has a working knowledge of both food/cooking terms and food-related sustainability issues and has written for business development would be a strong contender.

Ideally the Proposal Writer position will be based in the Bay Area, but we will consider candidates for remote work if they can travel to the Bay Area a few times a year.

Key Responsibilities

• Write and edit copy for new and rebid proposals focusing on clarity, accuracy, grammar and spelling while maintaining a consistent and appealing voice.
• Develop a deep understanding of Bon Appétit’s company values and services and translate complex and nuanced information into polished, reader-friendly content.
• Develop a strategic vision and storyline for each new and rebid proposal in collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
• Catch sparks of ideas and translate them into coherent copy that is both compelling and technically accurate.
• Identify and coordinate with and/or interview subject matter experts (SMEs) to translate technical information into a proposal document ensuring all RFPs requirements are met.
• Frame content in a manner that speaks to each client’s needs while accurately reflecting Bon Appétit’s brand.
• Provide frequent communication to internal stakeholders and regularly participate team meetings to review proposal priorities and progress.
• Manage day-to-day interaction with senior leaders and operations team leaders.
• Develop and maintain template language based on evolving proposal department needs.
• Develop sales materials and resources for teams doing prospecting work.
• Support the development of presentations, talking points, and scripts for sales purposes as needed.

Qualifications

• Education: BA or BS degree in English, Communications, or Journalism or equivalent experience.
• Professional experience: 5-7 years’ work experience to include corporate/nonprofit communications, public affairs, technical writing, grant writing, or journalism, and ideally a stint in the restaurant or food service industries.
• Software:
• Understanding of advanced features of Microsoft Word, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Familiar with Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe InDesign)

• Qualities:
• Experience writing clearly and concisely for multiple audiences with vastly different expectations.
• Exceptional analytical, creative problem solving and written communication skills
• Ability to juggle multiple projects under tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
• Strong editing, grammar, and punctuation skills: able to apply AP Style (and memorize our exceptions to it), love debating things like em-dashes vs. parenthetical commas and colons, and can be relied on to check any questionable spellings.
• Strong organizational skills, with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail
• Passion for great food and food experiences, as well as a basic level of general culinary and sustainability knowledge.
• Strong self-motivation to complete projects at a high degree of excellence.
• Organized, detail-oriented, and process-oriented.
• Willingness to roll up your sleeves and get to work on a lean and nimble team.
• Demonstrated success working without direct oversight.
