Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

The Project Director at the Office of Archaeological Studies carries out client-initiated projects from conception through completion of reporting. The position serves as the historic artifact analyst for the division and supervises other archaeologists on staff.

Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.

How does it get done?

The Project Director designs, conducts, manages, and completes all types of archaeological field investigations, including survey, monitoring, testing, and data recovery. Completes historic artifacts analysis for archaeological investigations they oversee and collaborates with other division staff to complete historic artifact analysis on other projects. Produces technical reports on the results of archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analysis; ensures final curation and disposition of archaeological collection; participates in office administration and activities, including public outreach and education opportunities; and directly supervises at least two (2) employees.

Private clients, state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, and the general public.

Ideal Candidate

Master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with four (4) years of Archaeology or Anthropology survey, excavation, analysis, and/or reporting experience; two (2) years of which must be supervisory. Must be listed or able to be listed on the SHPO Directory of Qualified Supervisory Personnel as a Principal Investigator/Project Director and have a minimum of two (2) years of experience analyzing historic artifacts.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and two (2) years of experience in archaeology survey, excavation, analysis and/or reporting. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work is performed in an office setting. Late hours, weekends, on-call, and callback work may be required. Travel may be required.
