ABOUT GAF – MT. VERNON, INDIANA
Mount Vernon, Indiana is located about 20 miles west of Evansville, along the Ohio River. Evansville is the 3rd largest city in Indiana and in 2017 was ranked as one of the most affordable places to live in America! The GAF site in Mount Vernon was founded in 1973 and produces a wide variety of products, including both residential and commercial roofing materials. Our 88 acre site is currently undergoing many exciting changes, including a large expansion of our production team! There’s never been a better time to join our team!
SUMMARY:
The Production Operator will ensure the production of high quality commercial and residential roofing materials through accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency of manufacturing processes to include machine operation, quality verification, packaging, housekeeping & forklift operation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Responsible for safe operation of equipment; preventing damage to equipment and preventing injuries
  • Participates fully as a member of the crew during downtime and start-up, product changes, operational problems, clean up, etc.
  • Assists in sheet breaks, threading machine and product changes.
  • Will assist in clearing machine jams (at the autocatcher) to keep product moving
  • Responsible for basic maintenance, trouble shooting, and cleaning of assigned equipment
  • Records and documents all required data on applicable sheets
  • Maintains work area in neat and orderly condition per housekeeping procedures for the department
  • Operates forklift in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Completes product testing in accordance with product specification. Keeps supervisor informed of variations in the production process at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in manufacturing concepts and safety practices and procedures is preferred.
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to contribute to a continuous improvement environment is critical.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have the ability to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; to raise and lower objects without mechanical aids; to extend hands and arms in any direction to reach, push or pull objects; to bend at the knees and at the waist; and to talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to be able to stand for long periods of time, to walk, to have the ability to balance when assisting in the thread-up of the machine and to climb industrial ladders and use catwalks and stairs in the work area.
  • The employee must have the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move 50 lbs. Product & raw materials in excess of 50 lbs. must be moved with two employees. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to wear and use required safety equipment, including safety glasses, steel-toe safety shoes, hearing protection, head protection, and gloves.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to fiberglass mat, asphalt, granules, fumes or airborne particles that fall below OSHA PELs. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to vibration from machines.
  • The employee occasionally works in high places when assisting with thread-ups and above the floor level on catwalks and/or stairs, and is exposed seasonally to hot and cold weather.
  • The noise level in the work environment requires hearing protection.
SCHEDULE:
The Mount Vernon plant schedules are based on business needs. Candidates must be available to work rotating 12 hour shifts. Overtime, holidays, weekends and other shifts may be required.

  • We offer a very competitive starting wage of $27.85 per hour as well as quarterly bonuses. Additionally, GAF offers a multitude of opportunities to prosper and expand within the company.
