OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Manager, Product Engineering, the Product Engineer will design and evaluate structures using existing RS products for customers within a team of product engineers. In addition, the Product Engineer will design and validate new products. As a member of the RS team, this position will support an organizational culture that cares for other's well-being through best practices in health and safety, in addition to the company's values of respect, integrity, quality, teamwork and professional growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze electric utility and communication structures using industry standard FEA software such as PLS-Pole and evaluate the point of attachment forces for all pole mounted hardware based on data supplied by the customer
  • Perform product testing and evaluation such as hardware capacity and full-scale tester loading and setup
  • Review and approve CAD drawings of composite utility structures and provide feedback
  • The ability to effectively and creatively problem solve, propose conceptual solutions, and characterize and quantify potential risks and interface with customers when required
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work well both independently and within cross-functional teams
  • Actively research and implement new and innovative methods to refine existing products
  • Propose conceptual solutions, characterize and quantify potential risks as well as interface with customers when required
  • The ability to interface with customer technical contacts to resolve project related issues
  • Possess a proactive work style with the proven ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize and meet deadlines while maintaining a commitment to accuracy and quality
  • Have working knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project)
  • May be required to review bid specifications and drawings, determine bid submission requirements, and be involved as appropriate in the preparation of bid proposal documents

TRAINING / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University Degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering
  • University Degree in Electrical Engineering and possess a minimum three years of experience in the electric utility industry with knowledge of or design background in the power distribution and/or transmission field
  • Must have a strong aptitude for structural engineering, particularly transmission and/or power distribution design.

The following items are not required but will be considered an asset:

  • Working knowledge of PLS-POLE utility structure design and stress analysis software and/or PLS-CADD utility line design software
  • FEA experience preferably with SolidWorks Simulation plus CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks or AutoCAD
  • Experience in the communication industry with a working knowledge of antenna structure design
  • Experience in foundation design
  • Registered Professional Engineer or qualified to apply
  • Familiarity with composite (FRP) materials

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Business or home office environment typically
  • Periodically spend time in the RS test lab or outside for full-scale pole testing or participate in project installations at customer sites
