SUMMARY:

The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library (AUC RWWL) supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world’s largest consortium of HBCUs—Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center.


The AUC RWWL is looking for a highly motivated individual seeking to gain experience broadening access and the discoverability of cultural heritage collections in a full-time, temporary position as a Processing Archivist Fellow. Working with the Archives Research Center processing team, the successful candidate will be responsible for processing archival and manuscript collections through appraisal, arrangement, description, and the creation of finding aids under the mentorship of trained archival staff. The Processing Archivist will participate in reference and outreach services along with library-wide committees and task forces. The Processing Archivist will collaborate with the Digital Services Department to make decisions about digitization, outreach, and digital exhibition of archival collections and will report to the Head of Processing and Collections Management.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform arrangement, appraisal, and description of archival materials following professional standards and institutional best practices.
  • Create collection inventories, and develop processing project plans for all types of archival materials.
  • Perform basic preservation and processing workflows for archival materials, including re-housing and surface cleaning.
  • Liaise with the collection donor or key stakeholders regarding collection description, project status, and priorities.
  • Conduct preservation assessments to determine appropriate preservation treatment and archival storage decisions.
  • Make recommendations for archival materials for digitization, including assisting with conducting inventories, identification, and packaging material.
  • Create descriptive finding aids for archival collections using ArchivesSpace.
  • Assist with developing promotional and outreach materials related to the archival collections, including exhibition preparation, articles, presentations at professional conferences, and blog posts.
  • Respond to reference and research inquiries.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Effective project management skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival and/or library metadata standards and best practices (EAD, DACS, RDA) preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with basic preservation and conservation standards for archival and manuscript collections or ability to learn.
  • Experience using data management and cataloging systems, such ArchivesSpace, or the ability to learn.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, with strong project management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
  • Experience with standard software such as Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Sensitivity in handling fragile archival materials.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.


PREFERRED:

Knowledge and experience with project management techniques and tools, including software.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or MA degree in History or Archival Science; academic training in archival management or digital librarianship
  • Two years of experience working in an academic library
  • Demonstrated knowledge of 20th-century African American history, literature, and culture, highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of technologies and archival content management systems is desirable.
  • Ability to perform physical activities associated with the archival environment.
