Geotechnical Engineer - Northern California
Twining Consulting, an innovative engineering, testing, and inspection Company with 100 years of history, is seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to support our northern California offices (Sacramento and Concord). Qualified candidates must have a GE Registration in California, master’s degree or PhD in civil/ geotechnical engineering, history of increasing levels of responsibility, and a minimum of six years’ experience in geotechnical engineering. This a practice-builder-level position and the successful candidate will be expected to develop and grow the geotechnical engineering practice in our northern California offices.
Qualified candidates will perform the following duties:
- Oversee, manage and direct geotechnical engineering evaluations for projects with varying range of complexity.
- Provide senior review and oversight of geotechnical engineering practices at Twining, Inc.
- Prepare subsurface investigation proposals and assist in the marketing and acquisition of subsurface investigations for Twining, Inc.
- Assist in the technical development of engineering staff.
- Assist marketing in business development, including attending short-list interviews as geotechnical expert, reviewing and evaluating RFPs/RFQs to help develop proposals and statement of qualifications.
Required competencies include:
- Command of both design- and construction-related aspects of geotechnical engineering.
- Experience in shallow and deep foundation design and Caltrans design of bridge foundations, retaining walls, MSE walls, and pavements.
- Experience with design of mat-type foundations and development of mat foundation design parameters.
- Ability to use Settle3D, Slide, AllPile, L-Pile, Shaft, CLiq, and LiquefyPro.
- Experience with field infiltration testing (borehole method, double-ring infiltrometer) and development of design infiltration rates in accordance with guidelines prepared by the various northern California governing agencies.
- Exemplary technical writing skills.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate clearly with co-workers, clients, and potential clients.
- Ability to maintain company established chargeability goals.
- Ability to work closely with the marketing group to help acquire geotechnical investigation projects.
- Master’s degree and/or PhD in civil/ geotechnical engineering.
- A minimum of 6 years of civil/geotechnical engineering experience.
- California GE registration required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; and
- Exhibits an advanced ability to analyze problems and develop alternative strategies to solve them.
Preferred competencies include:
- Experience in site-specific ground motion studies, including time-history analyses.
- Experience with cement- and lime-treated mix design and field implementation per Greenbook.
- Experience with successful interaction with CGS/DSA/OSHPD/GMED reviewers.
- Experience with successful sales and marketing of government agencies for geotechnical engineering projects; and
- Demonstrated successful leadership of a team of engineers/soil technicians.
