As part of the Grid Integration Division, the High Voltage Engineering team delivers pre-construction engineering and construction/commissioning engineering for High Voltage facilities associated with renewable energy power plants. Voltage ranges from 35kV up to 500kV. We are currently looking for a technical and team-oriented Senior Power Systems Engineer with a strong emphasis on protection and controls to help us digitalize and modernize our portfolio of HV substations. The engineer for this position should enjoy the versatility of technical tasks with a strong focus on understanding grid integration requirements for renewables. This is a solid opportunity for an engineer who not only is proficient in the technical engineering aspects but enjoys building and maintaining relationships with consultants and Power Utilities.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review and approval of short circuit, relay settings, and arc flash studies for renewable generation power plants: Solar, Wind, and Battery Storage.
  • Coordinate substation relay settings with solar inverter and wind turbine settings.
  • Develop protection schemes for Microgrid and black-start capabilities in hybrid power plants: solar + BESS + Wind.
  • Confident in power system analysis with respect to grid integration capabilities and protection systems.
  • Strong understanding of Schweitzer SEL relays in terms of logic and relay specifications.
  • Review of HV Substation designs and MV collection systems for Renewable plants.
  • Use of ETAP and PSS/E on a day-to-day basis to review models provided by third-party consultants.
  • Review and approval of PRC-027, PRC-025, PRC-019, and PRC-024 studies.
  • Review of PQ curves for both inverter-based technologies and wind turbines.
  • Excellent understanding of inverter-based technology operations and inverter settings.
  • Provide design review and advice on any issues that appear technically incorrect or inconsistent with power system studies.
  • Growth opportunity for a leadership role within the engineering team.
  • Work with a project team including real estate, permitting, interconnection, attorneys, finance, and construction.
  • Travel and fieldwork 20%.

Minimum Qualifications
  • M.S. Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Power Systems.
  • 7+ years of power systems analysis in the area of Protection and Controls.
  • Strong relay settings experience for renewable energy generators.
  • Excellent understanding of Short Circuit, Arc Flash, and Grounding Studies.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to lead technical discussions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize projects and tasks.
  • Ability to manage external consultants.

Desired Skills and Experience
  • Project Management experience handling consultants and EPCs.
  • Experience developing and/or reviewing grounding studies in CDEGS.
  • Experience with SCADA controls and architecture.
  • Review of EMTP models for Transient analysis using PSCAD or EMTP-RV.

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $120,000 and $144,500/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
