Post-Doctoral Statistician, AI Hub

The NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research is committed to creating new knowledge about the root causes of poverty, developing evidence-based interventions to address its consequences, and rapidly translating research findings into action through policy and best practices. The AI Hub at McSilver has been established to investigate how artificial intelligence (AI) systems can be used to equitably address poverty and challenges relating to race and public health and to provide thought leadership on the implications.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher (PhD completed or close to complete) to help lead statistical and machine learning research in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment in our areas of focus. Our multidisciplinary approach brings together social sciences researchers with artificial intelligence researchers and data scientists to apply new tools and solutions together with the policymakers and communities they serve. Prospective candidates must have completed or be close to the completion of their PhD.

The AI Hub at NYU McSilver will address a dearth of information about how AI can impact the lives of people in marginalized communities. Among the hub’s initial areas of focus will be building on the institute’s work to answer whether AI can be used to better predict suicide rates and behaviors by race, geography, income and other demographic variables, with other innovative public health research and interventions to follow.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on the AI Hub’s research in developing predictive tools in behavioral health, including predictive models for suicide prevention.
  • Primarily work with multiple data sets, including cleaning, tagging, data transformation, managing analytical tools, and data visualizations using the data and high-performance computing infrastructure at NYU.
  • Contribute to the thought leadership of the institute’s research initiatives, and collaborate on AI research with faculty and students affiliated with the AI Hub.

Qualifications:

  • PhD (completed or close to completion) in Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field with a focus on Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related areas.
  • Passionate about the next generation of data analytics, statistics, and their real-world impact on predictive models, natural language processing, and multi-modality artificial intelligence.
  • Demonstrated ability for independent research, with a strong record of influential publications on the application of data science and statistics to the problems surrounding poverty, racial inequity, and public health for underrepresented communities.

Preferred Experiences:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop original research in statistics and data science.
  • Research ability demonstrated by a strong publication record of top-tier journal and conference publications or submitted/accepted papers in top venues.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Active participation in the scientific community.
  • Strong communication skills.
