Job Description
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) Division of Atmospheric Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to participate in and coordinate an interdisciplinary, experimental research program on wildland fire processes, fire emissions into the atmosphere, and the pre- to post-fire change of eco-hydrologic conditions in the sagebrush ecosystem of the Great Basin. Within this 5-year program, the postdoc will have the opportunity to develop her/his own research while collaborating with the other participants and coordinating the experimental work. This position is located at DRI’s Northern Nevada Science Center in Reno, NV. The research activities associated with this position will build the knowledge base related to fire sciences, an important component of research in DRI. The successful candidate will collaborate broadly with Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE: DRI, UNR, UNLV) faculty and with external colleagues. Depending on performance, candidates hired as a Postdoc may have an opportunity for future promotion to Assistant Research Professor without a new search.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, engineering, forestry, atmospheric sciences, hydrology, ecosystem, computer sciences or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experimental expertise and interest in wildland fires and their impacts.
  • Background in one of the following scientific and engineering areas and interest in the others: Fire ecology, fire hydrology, fire processes, fire emissions and their atmospheric aging, and cyberinfrastructure Innovations (UAS, sensors, and data pipelines).
  • Interest in initiating, planning, obtaining funding, and carrying out research projects.
  • Exhibited ability to work collaboratively with others in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in presenting research results at professional meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability or interest to coordinate interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT 2) qualification or willingness to obtain this qualification.
  • Interest in student supervision and mentoring.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must be willing to travel for field work, client visits, and presenting at scientific conferences/meetings.
Compensation And Benefits
Minimum annual starting salary is $60,000 and is commensurate with experience and education. DRI offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, 6.2% retirement match, 1.25 annual leave days per month, a beginning balance of 15 sick leave days, 11 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the option to participate in a flexible spending account or health savings account. Additionally, there is no state income tax and no social security deduction. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance dependent on division funding.
