The department of chemistry at the City University of New York (CUNY)-College of Staten Island invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the research group of Dr. Rupal Gupta. The research conducted in Prof. Gupta’s laboratory involves understanding structure and functions of metalloproteins conducting catalysis and participating in human immune system. The project includes using bioinorganic, biophysical (electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), solid- and solution-state NMR spectroscopies) and computational methodologies.

Applicants must have a Ph.D in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics or a related field. An ideal candidate would have experience in protein expression, purification and related biochemical methodologies. Knowledge of enzymatic kinetics and biophysical characterization of biological molecules using techniques such as EPR or NMR spectroscopy is desired but not necessary. The work will be funded by NIH and NSF grants awarded to Prof. Gupta’s laboratory.

The college houses excellent facilities including an X-band EPR spectrometer with capabilities to perform measurements at cryogenic temperatures, stopped flow electronic absorption spectrometer, 600 MHz solid-state NMR spectrometer equipped with fast MAS probe, high performance computing facility and an advanced imaging facility (AIF) that hosts various imaging systems including confocal, live-cell, transmission electron, scanning electron, and atomic force microscopes. Researchers also have access to the facilities available at CUNY’s Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) and New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC).

Located in the southwest of NYC, the City University of New York-College of Staten Island has easy access to Manhattan, Brooklyn and other boroughs in addition to neighborhoods in close proximity of the college with highly affordable housing. The initial appointment will be provided for one year but may be renewed for another year based on the candidate’s performance.
