Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.


The Multimodal Data Analytics (MDA) group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the areas of biomedical image classification, segmentation, reconstruction, multimodal imaging, and AI/machine learning at scale on High-Performance Computing (HPC). Examples on areas of research interest include but not limited to:

  • Digital Pathology and Whole Slide Imaging
  • Weakly supervised learning and Multiple Instance Learning (MIL)
  • Attention/Self attention/Transformers for image classification
  • Multi-modality, multi-omics data analytics and classification
  • Visualization of large-scale HPC/AI discovery
  • Distributed AI methods for computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) image reconstruction and segmentation
  • Electron, X-ray and fluorescence microscopy image reconstruction and segmentation


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Participate in medical imaging research activities under the National Childhood Cancer Registry project.
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on the related research and projects.
  • Author peer reviewed papers, technical reports, participate in conferences, and contribute to grant proposal writings.
  • Develop, integrate, implement, and deploy novel AI/ML algorithms and workflows on HPC


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Medical Engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
  • Experience of signal and image processing, pattern classification, and machine learning.
  • Strong programming skill in Python and popular Deep Learning platforms such as PyTorch and TensorFlow


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Digital Pathology and Whole Slide Imaging
  • Experience in tomography and magnetic resonance image reconstruction and segmentation
  • Experience in GPU programming and large-scale cluster programming
  • Multi-modal, multi-resolution data analytics and classification skill
  • A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
